DURHAM -- Thanks to workman-like attitudes and strong teamwork, defending eastern 1-A dual-team champion Rosewood set the bar higher for future squads in its wrestling program.
The Eagles defeated Raleigh Millbrook and host Durham Jordan, and established a new single-season, dual-team record for victories with 33. Their lone loss occurred against Raleigh Athens Drive.
"The coaching staff knew this was going to be a tough night, but we were all pleasantly surprised," said Rosewood head coach Bill Edmundson, who has 398 career wins.
Millbrook won the Eagle Invitational in December and handed Rosewood a 19-point loss at the Firebird Duals just two weeks ago. This time, the Eagles (33-7 overall) handed the Wildcats a come-from-behind, 45-33 defeat.
Angel Jaramillo (103 pounds), Chris Lane (112) and Nick Quillen (119) all won by pin to secure the comeback. Lane stuck Millbrook's Nick Norton as time expired in the final period in their 112-pound bout.
"I felt like we would dominate the lower weights, but we got some big wins from Josh Pipkin, who avenged an earlier loss," said Edmundson. "Jamie Wooten and Taylor McGill also had key victories by pin. Angel, Chris, Nick and Zach wrestled their hearts out against the very best in 4-A and scored big wins."
Jaramillo stunned Jordan sophomore 103-pounder Robert Tomasic, who won the 4-A state title last season as a freshman.
Rosewood travels to Beddingfield on Tuesday for a tri-match.
