TARBORO -- Josh Pipkin and Zach Behrend each claimed an individual championship and Rosewood ended up third overall as a team in the annual Pierce-Davis Memorial contested Saturday at Tarboro High School.
The No. 1 seed, Pipkin started his gold-medal journey with a second-period fall over Rocky Mount's Daquone Stokes in the 160-pound division. Pipkin pinned Pasquotank's Tyler Bridgers in the semifinals and dominated Northern Nash's Ryan Sweet, 8-3, in the title match.
Behrend, the reigning News-Argus wrestler of the year, scored a semifinal-round major decision over Conley's Wesley Smith at 125 pounds. Behrend cruised past Currituck's K.T. Chapman, 12-8, in the final.
Nick Quillen finished runner-up at 119 pounds.
"Our goal going into the tournament was a top-five finish," said Rosewood head coach Bill Edmundson. "We are still not at our regional weights as a team and are still shuffling personnel until that happens. Even though Chris (Lane), Tyler (Thompson), Tyler (Dean), Adam (McKane), Jamie (Wooten), Taylor (McGill) and Jacob (Guthrie) didn't place, they were instrumental in helping us do as well as we did.
"As the only 1-A team at the tournament, I feel that we wrestled to our potential. The coaching staff is very pleased with the results."
Rosewood visits Southwest Onslow for a tri-match Tuesday that includes Jacksonville Northside.
