State-ranked Fike boots Southern Wayne from state soccer playoffs

WILSON -- Wilson Fike showed why it is one of the top teams in the state and handed Southern Wayne a 5-1 loss on the soccer pitch Saturday night.

The Golden Demons advanced to the third round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs where state-ranked Wilson Hunt will be waiting.

On Saturday night, the Demons got off to a hot start behind a potent offense and a fast midfield.

Kyle Lewis opened the scoring when he collected a loose ball and chipped a short shot over the head of the Southern Wayne keeper. In the 33rd minute, Jovan Garcia added a second goal off an assist by Eliseo Ferria.

"The last two games, I have had a couple midfielders go down and it showed tonight," said Southern Wayne head coach Mario Aguilar. "We had a few breakdowns and we got behind early because we weren't recovering as a team."

The Saints pulled within one goal in the 44th minute when Jesus Rodriquez collected a Fike turnover, made a quick move to his right and buried a shot past the Demons' keeper.

"I thought at that moment we had a chance to get back in it," said Aguilar. "But (Fike) came right back and scored a quick one, and it put us too far behind."

Austin Wiggs fired a shot under the crossbar in the 46th minute to make the score 3-1. Two minutes later, Wiggs added a second goal that iced the game for the Golden Demons. Lewis capped the scoring in the 57th minute.

Fike (21-4-0 overall) outshot Southern Wayne 18-6 on the night. The score was not indicative of how Saints goalie Luis Casteneda played. Casteneda collected eight saves and kept his team in the game for much of the first half.

Fike also held a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Southern Wayne finished the season 9-11-0 overall. The Saints won their first-ever postseason game in their first-ever playoff appearance last Wednesday.

"I am really proud of the year that we had and I am excited about next year," said Aguilar. "I think there is going to be even more interest in soccer next year and we only lose two seniors."
