Mount Olive wins one match in Classic

MOUNT OLIVE -- Carly White posted a match-high 13 kills and Mount Olive College outlasted Fayetteville State 25-11, 20-25, 25-17, 20-25, 16-14 on day two of the Mount Olive College Classic.
Erika Conner added 12 kills and a team-high nine digs. Ashlee Reuter contributed 10 kills and three blocks. Libero Feliz Ramirez provided six service aces and a match-high 15 digs defensively.
The Trojans lost to eventual Classic champion Armstrong Atlantic State in the final match of the day at Kornegay Arena. White supplied eight kills, while Conner collected five kills. Ramirez posted 12 digs. Destiny Ma'ave-Kuewa and all-tournament selection Kailey Preece dished out 13 assists apiece.
Mount Olive (4-19 overall) opened Classic play with a three-set loss on Friday evening.
Women's soccer
MOUNT OLIVE -- Sarah Porter scored twice and Mount Olive College stopped Limestone (S.C.) 2-1 on the Conference Carolinas women's soccer scene Saturday afternoon.
Porter scored in the 23rd minute off the double assist from Sydney Freilinghausen and Lindsey Stanley. The freshman collected the game-winning goal in the 69th minute off a double assist from Stanley and Carlee Bock.
Porter has 16 goals this season.
The Trojans (8-7-1 overall) entertain Chowan on Wednesday.
Men's soccer
MOUNT OLIVE -- Limestone scored two second-half goals in a 2-0 conquest of Mount Olive in Conference Carolinas men's soccer action Saturday evening at Amon Field.
Saints goalie H.B. Lockwood turned back the Trojans on two shot attempts in the opening half. John Mendoza had a shot to deflect off the left post.
A defensive back clear and a missed chip shot in the second half kept Mount Olive off the board in the second half. The Trojans fell to 3-11-1 overall this season heading into today's league match at in-state rival Pfeiffer University.
Cross country
MOUNT OLIVE -- Dalton Souza, Paul Hoffman and Ronnie Sturgill finished among the top five runners during the MOC Cross Country Invitational contested Friday afternoon.
The Trojans tallied a meet-winning 35 points -- 14 lower than runner-up UNC Wilmington. Division III members Mary Washington and Christopher Newport (Va.) University ended up among the top five teams along with Coastal Carolina.
Souza ran the 5K course in 15 minutes, 20 seconds. Hoffman crossed the line in 15:30, while Sturgill turned in a 15:44 effort. Coastal Carolina's Kyle Kling won the individual race in 15:10.
On the women's side, Chelsea Long finished first out of 64 runners and came within five seconds of the school record on Friday afternoon. Long beat out 17 runners from Division I programs en route to her first-ever individual collegiate title.
Long covered the 5K track in 18:48 -- the second-fastest time in school history.
