Martell named league's best in volleyball

GREENVILLE -- Kim Martell collected the Coastal Plains Independent Conference player-of-the-year award, and Wayne Country Day finished runner-up in the season-ending volleyball tournament on Friday afternoon.

Regular-season champion Oakwood claimed emerged the automatic qualifier with a 25-12, 25-15, 25-20 triumph over the Chargers. The 16-team, N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A tournament selections will be announced later today.

Along with Martell, libero Jessica Zhou and middle hitter Hannah Pearson also received all-CPIC recognition. Edie Hooks was named to the all-CPIC honorable mention squad.

"I'm really proud of all of my girls this year," said WCDS head coach Juliet Jones. "We have worked hard and have proved ourselves to be a great contender. I look forward to the state playoffs."

Martell cranked out 10 kills, served two aces and recorded five digs defensively against Oakwood. Pearson supplied three aces, six kills and five digs.

Sterling Coggins and Hooks handed out 10 and five assists, respectively.

The Chargers eliminated Faith Christian-Rocky Mount 25-20, 25-19, 25-15 in semifinal-round play. Martell logged a double-double -- 18 kills, 10 digs -- and served four aces.

Pearson registered 16 kills, eight assists, six aces and four digs. Coggins passed out 20 assists, and Zhou anchored the defense with a team- and match-high 15 digs.

WCDS is 16-7 overall.
