Boys' soccer

Rosewood 6,

Goldsboro 2

* Rosewood scored five unanswered goals in the second half on its way to a 6-2 Carolina 1-A Conference victory at Goldsboro on Thursday.

Damon Pate's goal off Bryan Johnson's assist gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead in the second minute.

Bret Robinson tied the game for the Eagles in the 14th minute. Steven Richardson's goal in the 36th minute put Goldsboro back in front 2-1.

Antonio Henriques scored twice for Rosewood in the second half. Matt Davis tacked on a goal. Zach Syverson and Zach Behrend each added a goal and an assist.

The Eagles (7-6-1 overall, 4-2-1) entertain Ayden Grifton on Monday, while the Cougars (2-13-1, 0-6) play host to Spring Creek.

JV football

* C.B. Aycock 30, Eastern Wayne 14 -- The Golden Falcons' Jeremy Hooks rushed for 74 yards and two touchdowns. Tyrik Joyner added 49 yards rushing. Quarterback Cody Garris completed six of 11 passes for 83 yards and two touchdowns. Austin Westbrook had two receptions for 34 yards. Thomas Hinnant and Trey Woodard both contributed touchdown receptions.

Joyner led the defense with 13 tackles. Khalil Owens and Brett Ryan both recorded seven tackles.

* Ayden Grifton 38, Goldsboro 22 -- Ayden-Grifton scored 16 straight points to break a 22-22 tie in the fourth quarter. The Chargers clinched the Carolina 1-A Conference championship.

Goldsboro's Ronald Woody returned a kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter. Kevontae Kornegay scored on a 24-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Kornegay finished with 35 yards on eight carries. Sherard Harvin hauled in a 25-yard touchdown pass from Shawn Hamm.

Lavar Butts paced the defense with eight tackles and three assists. Toric Best provided six tackles and two assists.

The Cougars are 5-3 overall.

Middle schools

* Football: Greenwood 30, Grantham 0 -- Mitchell Pike tossed a 40-yard touchdown pass to Joe Baker. Baker also returned a pair of interceptions for touchdowns. Bryce Jordan added a pick six. Greenwood faces Dillard on Oct. 28.

* Volleyball: Norwayne d. Rosewood 25-9, 14-25, 16-25, 25-6, 15-13 -- Norwayne (11-0 overall) clinched the Wayne County Middle School Athletic Conference Division I championship. Lexi Mercer recorded nine kills, two aces and two blocks for the Eagles (8-2). Callie Thornton supplied eight kills and Jordan DuBose had six aces. Norwayne entertains Grantham on Monday.
