Girls' tennis
C.B. Aycock 7, South Brunswick 2
* SOUTHPORT -- Charles B. Aycock cruised past South Brunswick 7-2 on Tuesday in opening-round play of the 2010 N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A dual-team playoffs.
Katie Gurley, Harlie Howard, Brittany Parrish and Misty Edwards each collected a singles win for the Golden Falcons. The tandems of Abbey Strickland-Gurley, Howard-Edwards and Parrish-Tiffany Godwin were also victorious.
Aycock (14-8 overall) faces Coastal Conference champion D.H. Conley next Tuesday.
Wayne Country Day 9, Oakwood 0
* GREENVILLE -- Wayne Country Day concluded its Coastal Plains Independent 1-A season with a shutout victory at River Birch.
Sarah Best and Mollie Catherine McDonald finished the season unbeaten in singles play. Best and teammate Mack Thompson concluded play undefeated at the No. 1 doubles slot.
Best, Thompson, McDonald, Katherine Roethling, Monica Beuhausen and Meredith Roethling all triumphed on the singles scene against Oakwood. Best-Thompson, Roethling-Bryan and McDonald-Roethling each earned a doubles point.
The Chargers (9-4 overall, 4-2 CPIC) return to action Friday in the conference tournament at Greenfield.
Greene Central 6, Swansboro 3
* SWANSBORO -- Greene Central won four of six singles matches in a 6-3 win at previously unbeaten Swansboro in the first round of the NCHSAA 2-A dual-team playoffs on Tuesday.
Jessica Hatch, Hayes Lovett, Brittany Collie and Kayla Radford each provided a singles victory for the Rams. The doubles teams of Lauren Carraway-Hatch and Collie-Laurie Sutton also prevailed.
"I was very proud of my team today," said Greene Central head coach Donald Clark. "I was very concerned about going on the road against an undefeated team in the opening round of the state playoffs. Our girls came out very focused in singles and that turned out to be the difference."
The Rams will play host to the eastern regional individual tournament Friday and Saturday.
Boys' soccer
Ayden-Grifton 3, Goldsboro 1
* AYDEN -- Ayden-Grifton scored two goals in the second half of a 3-1 Carolina 1-A Conference victory over Goldsboro on Tuesday.
Bryan Johnson scored the Cougars' lone goal in the 38th minute off Alan Odom's assist.
Goldsboro entertains Rosewood on Thursday.

Triton 3, C.B. Aycock 0
* ERWIN -- Triton eliminated Charles B. Aycock with a 25-12, 25-9, 25-14 victory in the semifinals of the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference tournament on Tuesday.
Madison Mercer contributed six kills and Brooke Bell provided four aces.
The Golden Falcons travel to South Brunswick on Saturday in the first round of the NCHSAA playoffs. The match is scheduled for 2 p.m.

* Hiromi Sueki earned play of the day honors on the Walnut Creek Country Club links.
Novella Zambelli captured low gross and Pete Reaves earned low net. Evelyn Rose seized low putts.

* 12-Under: Spring Creek 14, Boys and Girls Club 6 -- Ricky Steiner rushed for 155 yards on 16 carries with two touchdowns for Spring Creek. Devonte Corum supplied 61 yards rushing and Shykhym Allen added 32 yards. Allen led the defense with 12 tackles and Corum had seven stops.
* 10-Under: Spring Creek 26, Boys and Girls Club 8 -- Spring Creek's Jesse Casper rushed for 100 yards and two touchdowns. Casper also returned an interception for a score. Keonte Kittrell contributed 80 yards on the ground and Zach Plummer led the team in tackles.
* 8-Under: Mount Olive 39, Eastern Wayne 7 -- Jamari Leach rushed for two touchdowns and threw for one touchdown. Jalen Thompson rushed for a TD and caught Leach's scoring strike, while Davion Thompson rambled for two scores. Zion Johnson led the Hurricanes' defense with 13 stops. Quadrez Lassiter provided six tackles. Mount Olive improved to 5-0 overall this season.
* 12-Under: Mount Olive 48, Eastern Wayne 36 -- James Leonard rushed for two touchdowns and threw for another in a shootout victory over the Wee Warriors. Quentin Carlton supplied two TDs -- one rushing and one receiving. Tymir Leach returned a fumble for a touchdown, while Travis Chavis picked off a Warrior pass. Mount Olive improved to 6-0 overall this season.
