W. Country Day takes down GHS

Tyson Pearson delivered the offense.

Pearson scored three times and had an assist in Wayne Country Day's 5-1 non-conference win over the visiting Cougars on Wednesday afternoon.

Pearson collected the ball past midfield, dribbled through the Goldsboro defense into the 18-yard box and beat Cougars' keeper Chris Wiggins for a 1-0 lead just four minutes in.

Pearson struck again fewer than two minutes later scoring a nearly identical goal to his first one to extend the lead to 2-0.

"Tyson was up top all by himself," said Chargers head coach Michael Taylor. "We were playing a 5-4-1 (formation) with him up top and he's our leader. The wings did a good job and Tyson can finish."

Cody Neal scored off Pearson's cross through the 18-yard box in the eighth minute. Pearson scored his third goal midway through the first half to stretch the margin to 4-0.

Wayne Country Day held a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal in the first half.

"I think as a team we just weren't making the effort we could have," said Goldsboro head coach Tyler Gatlin. "I don't think we played with the urgency we could have. I think that's what killed us."

Jack Langston's shot in the 50th minute slipped through Wiggins' hands and the Chargers led 5-0.

The Cougars held a 5-4 edge in shots on goal in the second half and Damon Pate scored off Bryan Johnson's assist in the 60th minute.

"At halftime I urged them to step it up," said Gatlin. "I wasn't proud of the way we played in the first half. I thought we could have done a lot better. I just told them to go out there and redeem themselves in the second half. I'm proud of the way they stepped it up."

Chargers' keeper Mason Bland recorded five saves and Wiggins finished with three saves.

Wayne Country Day (2-2-0) faces Clinton on Friday in the Brittany VI in Wilson. Goldsboro (0-3-1) travels to Corinth-Holders on Monday.
