PIKEVILLE - With its final tune-up complete Charles B. Aycock is confident and ready to go.
The Golden Falcons split a Junior American Legion doubleheader with Edgecombe County Post 316 on Wednesday evening. Aycock claimed the opener 3-0 and fell 4-3 in game two.
The twinbill served as Aycock's final preparation before the Junior American Legion regional being contested this weekend at Southern Wayne High School and Mount Olive College.
"I think right now they knew we could possibly have a little let up right here at the end," said Golden Falcons head coach Nelson Cunningham. "I wanted to get at least one and we came out and got one. I think we needed that and I think we're ready to go."
Tyler Farmer scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the first inning of game one to give Aycock a 1-0 lead.
Josiah Laser's RBI single in the home half of the second increased the margin to 2-0.
Cameron Taylor's RBI single to right field in the bottom of the third inning scored Collin DuBose and extended the lead to 3-0.
"I played a lot of guys today and saw a lot of good things," said Cunningham. "The lineup had to be shaken up here and there and we still had some hits. I did have some guys that haven't been to the plate in a while step up and get some hits."
Post 316 had the tying run at the plate in both the fourth and fifth innings but couldn't capitalize.
Aycock (16-4) starting pitcher Avery Anderson threw four inning shutout innings and surrendered just two hits to earn the win on the mound. Bryant Stafford worked the fifth inning to record the save.
Zach Parisher's sac-fly in the top of the first inning of game two put Edgecombe County on top 1-0.
Taylor's RBI single in the home half of the first tied the game at 1-1. Logan Brown later scored on a wild pitch and Stafford added a sacrifice-fly.
Spiers Miller's sac-fly in the top of the third pulled Post 316 to within 3-2.
Austin Holland scored on an Aycock error in the top of the fourth to tie the game at 3-3. Layne Brewer followed with an RBI single that gave Edgecombe County a 4-3 advantage.
The Golden Falcons put the tying and go-ahead runs on base in the home half of the fourth inning but Stafford struck out to end the threat.
