Wayne South eliminates Durham

MOUNT OLIVE -- Facing elimination Wayne South got the type of performance it needed.

The Saints got a complete game from starting pitcher Jackson Hayes and executed with runners in scoring position for an 11-2 victory over Durham in the Junior American Legion East Regional on Saturday at Mount Olive College.

Wayne South advanced to face the Cary Bulls at Southern Wayne at 4 p.m. on Saturday. That game was suspended due to rain and is scheduled to resume at 12:30 p.m. today.

Tyler Gainey's RBI single and a Durham error that allowed a run to score gave the Saints a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Wayne South added a run in the home half of the second.

Gainey finished 3 for 4 at the plate. Clayton Cashwell and Will Raynor each had two hits and an RBI.

"We did a good job of putting the ball in play and capitalizing on some balls that we hit hard," Saints' head coach Trae McKee said. "We had a couple of big two-out hits. We shortened our swing up, fought off some pitches and got some pitches we could hit hard."

Taylor Brock's two-run single in the bottom of the fourth extended the lead to 5-0.

Tim Hampton's sac-fly and Bob DeLuca's single and a Saints' error pulled Durham to within 5-2 in the top of the fifth.

Cashwell's RBI single to left field in the bottom of the fifth extended Wayne South's lead to 6-2.

Raynor's single to left field and a Durham error in the bottom of the sixth scored three runs and increased the Saints' lead to 9-2. Keith Jones followed with an RBI single and Jamie Dove tacked on a sac-fly.

Hayes surrendered two runs (one earned) on five hits with one strikeout and a walk.

"Jackson going the distance, that's as could as he's been all year," Mckee said. "He threw his guts out there. He threw three pitches for a strike and he had good command all day. As young as he is, it's really good to see him go out there and compete the way he did."
