Post 11 ousted from playoffs

MOUNT OLIVE -- Wayne County needed a solid performance to even its best-of-three Area I East playoff series with Wilson on Tuesday night at Scarborough Field.

That type of effort never came.

Wilson Post 13 scored six runs in the top of the eighth inning and eliminated Wayne County Post 11 with a 10-0 victory in eight innings.

Leading 4-0, Wilson broke the game open with six runs on a bases-loaded walk, a passed ball, two singles and two Wayne County errors. Post 11 finished the game with four errors and committed six in the series.

Zack Mozingo suffered the loss on the mound surrendering seven runs (five earned) on eight hits with three walks and four strikeouts in seven innings of work. Mozingo was 2-0 during the regular season and had allowed just six runs in 20 innings prior to Tuesday night.

"We didn't take care of the baseball," said Wayne County head coach Rob Watt. "That's the name of the game. Mozingo pitched well. They didn't hit a whole lot of balls hard. We didn't take care of the ball. They played better defense than we did."

Zac Lee's RBI infield single in the top of the seventh gave Post 13 a 4-0 lead. Lee went 3 for 5 with an RBI.

Wilson picked up three runs in the top of the third inning on five hits and a Post 11 error.

Wayne County threatened with runners on second and third base with two outs in the bottom of the first inning but Mozingo grounded out to end the inning. Post 11 also left runners on first and second base in the home half of the fifth.

Post 13 starting pitcher Kyle Shields pitched a complete-game shutout and held Wayne County to four hits. The right-hander struck out six and walked three. Cody Davis led Post 11 with a 3 for 4 night at the plate. Wayne County scored double-digit runs 12 times during the regular season but scored just three runs in 17 innings during the series.

"I thought they threw three pretty good guys at us," said Watt. "It seemed like when we did square some balls up tonight they found a glove. They did a good-job of keeping us off-balance. Shields did a good job tonight. Things didn't go our way tonight."

Post 11 finished 15-8 in Watt's first season as head coach and could return the majority of its core players for next season.

"We finished 15-8, that's a productive year for anybody," said Watt. "There's only two guys that can't come back and play here next year. They're a better team than they way they played out here tonight and the night before. They'll be ready to go next year, they have a pretty sour taste in their mouth."
