Rosewood kept digging and digging but the hole was simply too big to climb out of Tuesday evening.

Union pushed across five runs in the top of the second inning and went on to an 8-3 road win in the first round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1-A softball playoffs.

The Spartans used six hits and a hit batsman to take a 5-0 lead in the top of the second inning.

"It's really hard when you have to come back from that deficit," said Eagles head coach Tracie Meadows. "My kids kept pecking away at it and doing a good job of it."

Union tacked on three more runs on three hits and three Rosewood errors in the top of the third. Megan Lee led the Spartans with three hits and two RBI. Union finished with 12 hits.

Amanda Beckert and Alyssa Spell each scored on a pair of Spartan errors in the home half of the third inning to pull the Eagles to within 8-2.

Laura Vinson raced home on a Union error in the bottom of the fourth. Rosewood was held to three hits and failed to capitalize on eight walks and four errors. The Eagles left eight runners on base, including six in the first four innings.

Rosewood had two runners on base in the first, third and fourth innings.

"It's hard to come back especially against a good hitting team and a pitcher that's throwing the ball pretty hard," said Meadows. "This experience helps a lot. The whole year helped a lot with experience level and maturity level because they haven't experienced this level of ball.

"To see this was a big deal to them and we look forward to seeing the maturity for next year."
