LAKE WACCAMAW -- East Columbus erupted for seven runs in the sixth inning and defeated North Duplin 11-1 in six innings in the second round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1-A state playoffs on Friday night.
Lake Waccamaw sophomore left-hander Forrest Wayne held the Rebels to just three hits. Wayne surrendered one run and recorded eight strikeouts with two walks.
James Kornegay, Will Lanier and Shayne Deaver each collected a hit for North Duplin.
Deaver suffered the loss on the mound.
The Rebels finished the season at 15-6.
Softball
Falcons fall
GREENVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock was held to three hits and had its season come to an end in a 5-0 loss on Friday night at D.H. Conley in the second round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A state playoffs.
Sarah Beth Marquis went 2 for 3 at the plate for the Golden Falcons. Jenna Van Horn added a hit.
Conley had been held to just one hit in the first four innings before pushing across five runs in the fifth inning. Brooke Bell endured the loss in the pitcher's circle for Aycock.
The Golden Falcons finished the season 14-10.
Rebels defeated
SPIVEY'S CORNER -- North Duplin was plagued by three errors and tallied just one hit in a 3-0 season-ending loss at Midway in the second round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1-A state playoffs on Friday.
Skylar McCarty had the Rebels' lone hit.
Ansley Hill took the loss inside the pitcher's circle surrendering three unearned runs on three hits with four walks and two strikeouts. North Duplin finished the season at 8-10.
"Even though we lost I am extremely proud of the way our girls played tonight," said Rebels' head coach Heather Best. "We faced a very talented team and played very well. At one point in our season we were 1-6. So, for us to make it into the second round of the playoffs, and play as well as we did, we can't hang our heads."
