HILLSBOROUGH -- North Duplin fended off a late-inning rally and eliminated River Mill Academy, 6-4, in their first-round N.C. High School Athletic Association 1-A softball playoff game Wednesday evening.

The teams played at Cedar Ridge High School.

Skylar McCarty led the Rebels with three hits. Angelica Favela added two hits and three RBI. Caitlin Davis tallied one hit in the win.

Ansley Hill earned the win in the pitcher's circle. Hill struck out five batters over 6 2/3 innings.

North Duplin (8-9 overall) travels to Midway on Friday night.

Baseball

Rams escape

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central came through with some late-inning heroics in a 5-4 victory over Kitty Hawk First Flight in the second round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 2-A baseball playoffs on Wednesday evening.

Trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Wes Sowers belted a double and was plated two batters later when Zack Chase unleased an RBI base hit.

The Rams won the game in the bottom of the ninth inning when Chase drew a bases-loaded walk that sealed the contest.

Sowers pitched one inning of perfect relief to earn the mound win. Chase led the Rams at the plate with a two-hit effort that included two RBI. Will Bynum also finished with two hits.

Greene Central (18-6 overall) entertains archrival Farmville Central on Friday. First pitch is 7 p.m. at the James R. Fulghum Athletic Complex.
