Bynum belts grand slam, Greene Central hammers Warren County

SNOW HILL -- Will Bynum swatted a first-inning, grand slam home run and Greene Central thumped Warren County 23-0 in their opening-round, N.C. High School Athletic Association 2-A baseball playoff game Friday evening.
Bynum concluded the night 2-for-2 with six RBI.
Zach Chase provided four hits and six RBI. Trent Murray (RBI) and Ryan Cobb (4 RBI) combined for five hits in the mercy rule-shortened affair.
Derek Grant claimed the mound win for Greene Central. He surrendered one hit and fanned two Eagle batters in a three-inning stint.
The Rams (17-6 overall) entertain First Flight at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Rebels advance
BURLINGTON -- Three North Duplin hurlers combined for a two-hitter in a 20-3 romp over River Mill Academy in first-round action of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1-A baseball playoffs.
Brian Chase held RMA hitless and logged two strikeouts in two innings. Larry White threw two-thirds of an inning. Ryan Wolfe provided two-plus innings of no-hit, four-strikeout relief.
The trio combined for seven strikeouts.
Wolfe and Mitchell Thigpen paced the Rebels' offense with three hits and an RBI apiece. James Kornegay batted 2-for-2, drew a walk and scored four runs. Julio Mora doubled in his lone official at-bat.
North Duplin (14-5 overall) faces Southwest Onslow in second-round action Tuesday.
Saints fall
GREENSBORO -- Northern Guilford plated the game-winning run in the sixth inning, and turned back Southern Wayne 5-4 in their first-round, N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A baseball playoff game Friday.
The teams were tied at 5-5 through 51/2 innings before Northern cranked out back-to-back doubles against Saints right-hander Will Broadwell. Broadwell tossed a complete-game, eight-hitter and logged two strikeouts.
All five runs were earned.
Cody Davis (RBI) and Zach Grantham (RBI) paced Southern Wayne's offense with two hits apiece. Taylor Brock slugged a lead-off, solo home run in the fourth inning.
Taylor Gainey and Ashton Cox each provided one hit.
"I thought our kids competed and I was proud of their effort," said Southern Wayne head coach Trae McKee.
The Saints concluded the year 14-14 overall.
Soccer
Warriors ousted
Morgan Leyble notched a natural hat trick (three consecutive goals), and Jacksonville eliminated Eastern Wayne 3-0 in their second-round, N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A women's soccer playoff game.
The Cardinals (15-6-3 overall) owned a 13-8 edge in shots and 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
"We began strong and had two great chances in the first 10 minutes that, unfortunately, did not find the net," said Eastern Wayne head coach Jorg Wagner. "Despite the early deficit, we were able to maintain our composure and stood quite compact in the midfield, looking for counter attack opportunities.
"We were able to contain them for long stretches of the match, but Leyble proved to be a little too much for us."
Eastern Wayne concluded the year 13-5-0.
