ERWIN -- Southern Wayne turned three double plays and doubled up Triton 4-2 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference baseball action Friday evening.

The Saints turned twin killings in the second, third and fifth innings.

The fifth-inning DP proved especially crucial. The Hawks loaded the sacks with no outs and winning pitcher Will Raynor induced a pop-up in foul territory on the right side near the dugout. Taylor Brock tracked the ball and went over the fence to record the out.

Moments later, left fielder Breyon Johnson snagged a line-drive shot and threw back to second base for the inning-ending double play.

"Defensively, we played a great ballgame," said Southern Wayne head coach Trae McKee. "We made some really big plays and the effort ... there was a lot of hustle going after balls."

Southern Wayne (10-8 overall, 2-4 ECC) tallied all four runs in the second inning. Tyler Gainey rapped a two-RBI single, while Cody Davis and Keith Jones each produced an RBI base knock.

Davis ended the contest 3-for-4.

Raynor permitted six hits and fanned two Triton batters in five scoreless innings. Will Broadwell supplied two innings of three-strikeout, two-hit relief.

"I thought Will Raynor did a great job," said McKee. "He was able to throw his off-speed (pitch) for a strike early in the count. He worked the ball well on both sides of the plate. Will Broadwell, I was proud that he came in and shut the door."

Triton avoided the shutout with two seventh-inning runs.

Southern Wayne entertains North Lenoir on Tuesday. First pitch is 7 p.m. on the Doyle Whitfield Athletic Complex diamond.
