Eastern Wayne led off the second half of the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference boys' golf schedule with an impressive, and improbable, victory at Lane Tree Golf Club on Monday afternoon.

The Warriors carded their season-low, four-man total of 319 which was 10 strokes better than South Johnston and 13 shots better than Southern Wayne. The league's first-place team in the season standings, Triton, finished fourth.

Aided by a short setup that saw the course play at just 5,700 yards, several golfers recorded better rounds than they had in the previous three conference matches.

The dynamic duo of Ryan Lake and Caleb Jones led the Eastern Wayne rally. Lake fired a 74 and Jones finished one stroke behind with a 75. Keith Gregorcyk and Hidematsu Sueki each recorded an 85 to round out the Warriors' team score.

"I think this is closer to where we should be each time out," said Eastern Wayne head coach Scott Waller. "Caleb and Ryan each played extremely well on a course that they both consider their home course."

South Johnston's Taylor Thornton claimed medalist honors with 72 as the Trojans cut into Triton's lead in the overall team standings.

Southern Wayne received four solid performances as its maintained second place for the season. Kyle Best led the Saints with a 79 and John Graham added an 80. Will Bunch finished with an 84 and Kent Moore carded an 89.

"I thought we were a little flat during the last match and I told the guys that we had to play better than that," said Saints head coach Jeremy Joyner. "Today they were much better. I'm really happy for Kent Moore being able to break 90 for the first time in a match."

Dylan Mitchell's 79 led C.B. Aycock to a 347 team score. Michael Fearney (84), Cory Freels (91) and Michael Mazur (93) rounded out the Golden Falcons' total.

North Lenoir finished the day with a 371 team score. Lane Hussey led the Hawks with an 86. Greg Dryden and Mike Carter each fired rounds of 92. Zach Hanncock added a 101.

The next ECC meet is Thursday at Chickori Country Club which is the home site for Triton.
