Eastern Wayne doubles up Havelock

GREENVILLE -- There's more to winning and losing than the numbers on the scoreboard.

Attention to detail and the execution of fundamentals are just as important as the outcome.

That was the opinion of less-than-pleased Eastern Wayne head coach Jabo Fulghum after the Warriors' 10-5, comeback victory over Havelock on Saturday at Guy Smith Stadium in the Jimmie R. Grimsley Hot Stove League Invitational.

Eastern Wayne committed four errors, issued seven walks, stranded seven runners and made questionable base-running decisions.

"That was probably the ugliest win I think I've ever seen," said Fulghum. "We did a lot of dumb things as a team that's supposed to be older. We're better than the way we're playing and that's what's frustrating.

"We're not playing smart, and getting out here and doing the little things that it takes to win close games."

The Rams pushed across five runs on six hits, two walks and an error in the top of the first. Warriors' starting pitcher Michael Fields was chased from the mound with two outs in the first in favor of Zach Beachem.

Eastern Wayne answered with five runs of its own in the home half of the second inning. Robert Faucette and Jose Ponce both scored on wild pitches to pull the Warriors within 5-2.

Logan Wicks followed with an RBI single and Greg Simms added an RBI double. Beachem's RBI infield single capped the outburst.

Beachem, Josh Frederick and Zack Mozingo combined to pitch 6 2/3 of two-hit shutout relief. Havelock tallied just two hits after the first inning. Beachem earned the win, allowing two hits with three strikeouts and four walks in 3 2/3 innings.

"Beachem came in and threw well," said Fulghum. "He redeemed himself for the other night. He threw the ball extremely well and kept us in it. I thought Frederick looked better today."

Ponce scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the third to give Eastern Wayne the lead for good at 6-5.

Cambric Moye's two-run double pushed the lead to 8-5 in the bottom of the fourth inning. Faucette tacked on an RBI single to stretch the lead to 9-5.

Simms scored the Warriors' final run on a Rams' error in the bottom of the fifth. The junior outfielder led Eastern Wayne (6-7 overall) with two hits and an RBI. Moye, Beachem, Faucette, Mozingo and Wicks each had one hit.

Havelock loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the seventh, but Mozingo struck out Evan Gumble to end the ballgame.

The Warriors face the Czech National 18U team at 3 p.m. on Monday at Guy Smith Stadium.
