DURHAM -- Princeton opened the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1-A boys' basketball playoffs with a 75-65 victory over N.C. School of Science and Math.

The Dawgs jumped out to a 23-12 lead after one quarter.

Senior point guard David Gurganus paced the Princeton offense with 20 points and eight assists. Wes Wood chipped in 16 points and Andre Nixon added 10 points and eight rebounds.

Princeton (13-12 overall) travels to Tri-County Conference champion Pender on Wednesday.

Warriors escape

SHALLOTTE -- Eastern Wayne overcame a slow start and bested West Brunswick 68-60 on Monday night in the first round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A playoffs.

The Warriors faced a five-point deficit in the opening minutes.

"I thought we dug ourselves a little hole in the opening minutes," said Eastern Wayne head coach Marvin Bowman. "But our guys found their feet in the second half and we were able to pull out a win."

Will White paced the Eastern Wayne offense with 17 points and five rebounds. Lamar Best added 16 points and Levonte McKiver added eight points.

The Warriors (11-11 overall) travel to South Central on Wednesday evening.

Girls' basketball

Gators eliminated

DURHAM -- Melanique DeVeaux reached the 1,000-point plateau for her prep career, but couldn't carry Spring Creek to its first-ever playoff victory in girls' basketball.

DeVeaux tallied 13 points and dished out seven assists in the Gators' season-ending, 58-42 loss to N.C. School of Science and Math in the NCHSAA 1-A playoffs Monday evening.

"The little things hurt us tonight, like boxing out," said Spring Creek head coach Mandy Ramfjord. "I am losing six seniors, but I'm looking forward to next year."

Norma Valentin added a double-double, 14 points and 12 rebounds, in the road setback. Janna Price knocked down 12 points.

The Gators concluded the year 8-14 overall.

JV sports

* Girls' basketball: Crossroads Christian 52, Wayne Christian 35 -- Wayne Christian finished as the runner-up in the Carolina Christian Confernce tournament. Jessica Swets paced the Eagles with 16 points and seven rebounds. Brittney O'Hara added six points and five steals in the defeat. Wayne Christian finished the year 10-5 overall.
