Pirates' rally falls short

GREENVILLE -- No. 2-ranked Virginia held off a late-game charge by No. 11-ranked East Carolina and escaped with a 14-11 victory at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Cavaliers won the series 2-1.

Down 13-4 through 71/2 innings, East Carolina roared back in its eighth at-bat. Senior Kyle Roller roped a double to right center field and Devin Harris followed with an RBI single up the middle.

Austin Homan connected on a single and each runner moved up on a groundout by Charles B. Aycock alum Zach Wright. Harris touched home on Chris Gosik's sacrifice fly to make it 13-6.

Eastern Wayne alum John Wooten rapped a two-run homer, his second of the weekend series, to keep the Pirates' comeback intact. Philip Clark and Trent Whitehead drew back-to-back walks before Dustin Harrington slapped a bases-clearing double down the left-field line.

Roller capped the seven-run outburst with his second hit of the inning.

Virginia (2-1 overall) added an insurance run in the ninth.

Pirate hurler Brad Mincey was saddled with the loss.

East Carolina (1-2) entertains Old Dominion on Tuesday. First pitch is 4 p.m.
