CALYPSO -- Melanique DeVeaux poured in a game-high 23 points as Spring Creek outlasted North Duplin 49-44 in the Carolina 1-A Conference regular-season finale for both teams Monday evening.

DeVeaux shot 7 of 10 from the free throw line, pulled down six rebounds, dished out seven assists and picked the Rebels for three steals. Janna Price contributed six points, three rebounds, two assists and three steals.

Norma Valetin added six points, eight boards and four steals.

The Gators (8-12 overall, 6-4 CC) return home today for quarterfinal-round play in the season-ending conference tournament. They face sixth-seeded Princeton at 7:30 p.m., while fifth-seeded North Duplin opposes fourth-seeded Rosewood at 6 p.m.

CBA advances

Charles B. Aycock did just enough to pull out a 48-45 win over county rival Southern Wayne in the opening round of the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference girls' basketball tournament on Monday.

The game was played at Eastern Wayne High School.

The third-seeded Golden Falcons opened up a six-point lead in the first half thanks to some hot outside shooting. Courtnei Gilbert buried two 3-pointers and Imari Howell added one shot from beyond the arc as C.B. Aycock seized a 24-18 advantage.

"It was not the best game we have played this season, but it was a win," said Golden Falcons head coach Laura Romo. "We just flat out did not rebound the basketball and that allowed (Southern Wayne) to stay close."

Gilbert paced the victors with 13 points and Sheeks added 11 points. The Golden Falcons (12-12 overall) advance to play second-seeded South Johnston in the tournament semifinals on Wednesday.

Kayla Powell paced the Saints with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Carlton added 12 points and Ineka Williams finished with eight markers.

The loss ends Southern Wayne's (2-19) season.

Eagles squeak by

PRINCETON -- Nicole Melvin's 3-pointer at the buzzer was off the mark and Rosewood's girls' survived for a 37-35 win at Princeton on Monday night.

The Eagles built a 34-28 lead with fewer than four minutes to play, but the Bulldogs scored five unanswered points to pull within 34-33. Megan Tyndall's 3-point play gave Rosewood a 37-33 cushion with 11/2 minutes to go.

Melvin's layup trimmed the deficit to 37-35 and the Eagles turned the ball over with 21 seconds left. Melvin's 3-pointer was off the mark as time expired.

Tyndall paced Rosewood (6-17 overall, 4-6 CC) with 15 points and Taylor Johnson had 10. Melvin scored 11 for the Bulldogs (4-18, 1-9) and Tylan George added eight.

Warriors win

ERWIN -- Eastern Wayne survived a scare from North Lenoir with a 45-39, opening-round win the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference tournament on Monday.

The Warriors played without leading scorer Tiarra McIntyre due to illness.

Tia Jones paced the Eastern Wayne offense with 14 points and nine rebounds. Shontay Boseman added 10 points and Danielle Daniel added nine points.

Marissa Lanier led the Hawks with 19 points.

Eastern Wayne (7-12 overall) advances to play Triton in the semifinals at Southern Wayne on Wednesday.

Boys' basketball

Rebels rise up

CALYPSO -- North Duplin captured its second win of the season on senior night with a 51-49 victory over Spring Creek on Monday.

Devin Oliver emerged as the hero with a buzzer-beater as time expired in the Carolina 1-A Conference regular-season finale for both teams.

Oliver paced the Rebels' offense with 16 points including the fateful game-winner. James Kornegay added 11 points and Marcus Kornegay added six points.

The Gators were paced by Kenneth Freeman's 15-point outing. John Midgette added 12 points.

Both teams advance to the opening round of the Carolina 1-A Conference tournament tonight at Princeton High School. Spring Creek will play Rosewood at 6 p.m. and North Duplin (2-19 overall) will take on Princeton at 7:30 p.m.

Swimming

Cougars compete

CARY -- A pair of Goldsboro swimmers earned top-10 finishes in the 2010 N.C. High School Athletic Association 1-A/2-A championship meet at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary on Monday.

Paul Travis finished sixth in the 500-yard freestyle race and followed that effort by grabbing ninth place in the 200 free.

Logan Cole earned a seventh-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly and came home 15th in the 200 individual medley.

The duo earned 30 team points which was good enough for 30th place in the 56-team field. Carrboro won the team title with 610 points.
