Chowan picks up pair of one-run softball victories over winless Mount Olive

MURFREESBORO -- Chowan University triumphed in two final at-bats and swept a non-conference doubleheader from Mount Olive College on the softball diamond Tuesday afternoon.

The Hawks took the opener 10-9 and claimed the nightcap, 5-4, which called in the sixth inning due to darkness.

Katie Nalley went 2-for-4 with an RBI in the first game for Mount Olive, which outhit Chowan 12-7. Teammates Robbin Kennedy, Kelly Minshew, Kayla Voorhees and Aubrey Reinhard pounded out two hits apiece.

Kennedy and Minshew each swatted a home run in game two. Kennedy collected three RBI.

Mount Olive (0-6 overall) opens its home season Saturday with a doubleheader against Tusculum (Tenn.) on the Nancy Chapman Cassell Field diamond. Perennial national power Francis Marion (S.C.) comes calling Sunday for a doubleheader.

Each twinbill starts at 1 p.m.

Knox honored

HIGH POINT -- In just his first week in a Mount Olive College uniform, Mike Knox has been named the Conference Carolinas baseball player of the week.

Knox batted .533 with 12 RBI in four games as the No. 16-ranked Trojans started the season 4-0. A sophomore transfer from North Carolina, Knox belted a grand slam against Lenoir-Rhyne and homered against Coker (S.C.) College.

The Apex High School alum concluded the week 8 for 15 with five extra-base knocks.

Mount Olive (5-0 overall) entertains Shaw today. First pitch is 2:30 p.m. at Scarborough Field.

Trojan women 13th

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. - Mount Olive finished 13th out of 16 teams at the Newberry College Women's Golf Invitational contested at Hilton Head Island.

The Trojans were in eighth place after Monday's first round. The 36-hole tournament concluded Tuesday.

Valentina Urquiola tied for 25th out of 80 golfers with 36-hole score of 173. Emelie Andersson, who was in fourth place after 18 holes, tied for 31st with a 175. Tegan Skirpstas tied for 41st with a 180 and Lindsay Becker finished 72nd with a 211.

The Trojans carded a team total of 739, finishing three strokes behind Conference Carolinas opponent Queens and 29 shots ahead of Columbus State.

MOC returns to action Feb. 27-28 at the St. Andrews Presbyterian College Spring Invitational.
