SEVEN SPRINGS -- Rosewood fended off a late charge by North Duplin and claimed a 58-42 victory in the opening round of the Carolina 1-A Conference girls' basketball tournament on Tuesday evening.

The Eagles used a strong post pressence to open up a 15-6 advantage in the first quarter, but watched as the Rebels cut the lead to one point at halftime.

North Duplin held a 35-33 lead after three quarters, but foul trouble began to show itself in the final eight minutes. Rosewood's Taylor Johnson scored nine points in the fourth quarter as the Eagles erupted for 25 points.

"Taylor did what you want any good post player to do," said Rosewood interim coach Dwight France. "She was agressive on the glass and she made some big shots at key moments."

Eagles head coach Ryan Wells missed the game due to illness.

Johnson finished with 24 points and 15 rebounds to lead the victors. Laura Vinson added 19 points and Megann Tyndall finished with five points.

Fourth-seeded Rosewood (7-17 overall) will battle top-seeded Goldsboro tonight in the semifinals at North Duplin. Tip-off is 6 p.m.

Angelica Favela led the Rebels with 17 points, while sophomore Tearra Ammons added 14 markers. North Duplin finished the season 1-21 overall.
