PIKEVILLE -- The seniors did their job.
Justin Farrell, Kaleb Robinson and Jon Rudolph showed poise and maturity on the wrestling mat Tuesday evening, and led Charles B. Aycock to a 51-24 victory over Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference newcomer Triton.
The Golden Falcons (16-7 overall, 3-0 ECC) clinched a share of the ECC regular-season championship and inched closer to the No. 1 seed for the N.C. High School Athletic Association dual-team playoffs. Aycock concludes its league schedule Feb. 2 at county rival Southern Wayne.
"Our seniors demonstrated great leadership," said Golden Falcons head coach Marc Peck. "We have faced adversity all year and after going down 18-0, our team responded again to the challenge facing them.
"We are truly proud of this group of young men."
Triton (8-9, 2-1) emerged victorious in the first three individual matches. Andrew Chambers drew a forfeit at 119 pounds to stop the momentum and ignite a match-clinching, 51-3 run for Aycock.
Farrell pinned the Hawks' Lauren Mozingo late in the opening period at 125 pounds and 130-pounder Preston Tucker drew a forfeit. Zeb Darden, Aaron Pate, Jordan Lee, Khaleil Owens, Nick Simmons, Robinson and Rudolph each defeated their respective opponent. Pate claimed a 7-3 decision over Anthony Harrington, while Owens slipped past Jermonte Fuller, 10-9.
Triton triumphed at 215 pounds.
Aycock won for the 12th time in its last 16 outings this season.
"We continue to improve each we hit the mat and tonight we took a major step in accomplishing our primary goal -- a conference championship," said Peck.
