Lamar Best drained a 3-pointer as time expired and Eastern Wayne squeaked past visiting Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference foe North Lenoir 57-54 on Tuesday night.
Robert Washington scored 18 points for the Warriors. Will White had 17 points and Best added 10. Trey Harris led the Hawks with 16 points.
Eastern Wayne (8-7 overall, 3-2 ECC) welcomes South Johnston on Friday night.
GHS earns road win
AYDEN -- Goldsboro squandered a 10-point halftime lead, but recovered for a 67-56 win at Carolina 1-A Conference opponent Ayden-Grifton on Tuesday night.
Rasean Brewington paced the Cougars with 26 points. James Williams scored 17 points and Michael Langston supplied 12.
Goldsboro (11-6 overall, 5-0 CC) plays host to North Duplin on Friday night.
SCHS downs ND
SEVEN SPRINGS -- Spring Creek picked up its first Carolina 1-A Conference win of the year by defeating North Duplin 48-44 on Tuesday night.
Adam Haggerty recorded 12 points for the Gators. John Midgette provided 11 points and Melvin DeVeaux had 10.
Devin Oliver scored a game-high 22 points for the Rebels. James Kornegay finished with 10.
Spring Creek (6-9 overall, 1-4 CC) entertains Princeton on Friday while North Duplin (0-16, 0-5) travels to Goldsboro.
Wrestling
EW pins SW
Eric Lemmon collected a key upper-weight victory as Eastern Wayne eased past county rival Southern Wayne 42-30 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference action Tuesday evening.
Lemmon pinned the Saints' Dakota Toms with 50 seconds remaining in the third period. Teammates Logan Wicks (189 pounds) and Blake Terrell drew back-to-back forfeits to give the Warriors their first ECC win in four tries this season.
"Eric has really worked hard this year," said Eastern Wayne head coach Jon Jones. "It paid off for him tonight with a win against a good wrestler in Toms."
The Warriors, who snapped a six-match losing streak, received individual triumphs from Sydney Villareal, Megan LaFave, Corben Harris and Austin Helm.
Travis Memmelaar, Daniel Nilssen, Jacob Richards, Jamison Dove, Ethan Brogden and Minek Ford each captured an individual win for Southern Wayne.
Girls' basketball
Eagles chase Bulldogs
Rosewood used an aggressive press defense to create turnovers on its way to a 39-15 victory over visiting Carolina 1-A Conference archrival Princeton on Tuesday evening.
The Bulldogs struggled all night with the Eagles' ball pressure and never appeared comfortable offensively. Princeton was held scoreless in the second quarter.
"We've been working hard on our press," said Rosewood head coach Ryan Wells. "We're playing a little bit more guard-heavy right now. We're going to have to put pressure on teams to make them turn it over. The girls have really stepped it up the last two weeks."
Logan Bill paced Rosewood with 10 points. Megann Tyndall and Taylor Johnson provided nine points apiece. Nicole Melvin and Katherine Wallace both scored four points for the Bulldogs.
The Eagles (4-14 overall, 2-3 CC) entertain Ayden-Grifton on Friday, while the Bulldogs (3-14, 0-5) visit Spring Creek.
C.B. Aycock rolls
DUDLEY --Charles B. Aycock made itself right at home in a 54-28 victory over Southern Wayne on the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference scene on Tuesday night.
The Golden Falcons got off to a good start behind a strong shooting night by Imari Howell. After one period Howell had tallied five points and the visitors earned an 11-7 lead.
C.B. Aycock (9-8 overall, 3-2 ECC) broke the game open in the third quarter. Courtney Sheeks and Ivy Hartzell propelled the Golden Falcons to a 43-21 advantage with five points each in the period.
Howell finished with 15 points. Hartzell added 11 points in the win and Sheeks scored nine points.
C.B. Aycock will play host to Goldsboro tonight.
Southern Wayne (2-13, 1-4) was paced by Danielle Carlton's nine-point outing. Ineka Williams added eight points. The Saints will travel to Triton on Friday.
Cougars victorious
AYDEN -- Akeyanna Whitlor poured in 23 points to go with nine rebounds as Goldsboro remained perfect in Carolina 1-A Conference play with a 53-34 win at Ayden-Grifton on Tuesday evening.
Alexus Myles pitched in 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Cougars. Zeara McDuffie had seven points and 14 assists.
Goldsboro (13-4 overall, 5-0 CC) entertains North Duplin on Friday.
Gators bite Rebels
SEVEN SPRINGS -- Spring Creek knocked off Carolina 1-A Conference foe North Duplin 53-32 on Tuesday night.
Katlyn Casey led the Gators with 14 points and nine steals. Savannah Egleston supplied 12 points, while Melanique DeVeaux had 10 points and nine assists.
Tiffany Williams scored 10 points for the Rebels and Angelica Favela had seven points.
Spring Creek (5-15 overall, 3-2 CC) plays host to Princeton on Friday while North Duplin (1-15, 1-4) travels to Goldsboro.
Faith defeated
RALEIGH -- Faith Christian suffered a 44-14 defeat at N.C. Christian Schools Association 2-A opponent Neuse Christian on Tuesday evening.
Madison Caudle scored four points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Conquerors. Charity Spencer also had four points.
Faith (9-7 overall, 6-4 NCCSA 2-A) plays host to Berean next Tuesday.
Chargers fall short
Greenfield outlasted Wayne Country Day 51-45 in Coastal Plains Independent Conference play on Tuesday night.
Mack Thompson finished with 13 points for the Chargers. Kim Martell chipped in 10 points and Hannah Pearson had eight.
Wayne Country Day (9-10 overall, 3-1 CPIC) entertains Trinity-Fayetteville on Thursday.
JV sports
* Boys' basketball: Southern Wayne 55, Charles B. Aycock 35 -- Hunter Dentzer led the Golden Falcons with 10 points and Derrick Lofton finished with nine. Aycock (6-8 overall) entertains Goldsboro today.
* Girls' basketball: Eastern Wayne 35, North Lenoir 32 -- Jasmine Benjamin paced the Warriors with 12 points and four steals. Sequia Hall had seven points, five assists and three steals. Eastern Wayne overcame a 15-point second-half deficit. The Warriors (7-6 overall) play host to South Johnston on Friday.
* Girls' basketball: Greenfield 25, Wayne Country Day 1 -- Meredith Roethling scored the Chargers' lone point. Wayne Country Day plays host to Flora MacDonald on Feb. 6.
Middle schools
* Girls' basketball: Norwayne 46, Greenwood 40 -- Quanika Artis set a Norwayne school-record with 40 points and Meredith Burroughs added six. Norwayne (10-2, 4-1) plays host to Rosewood on Thursday.
