SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Helen Moore led four players in double figures with a game-high 23 points, and Mount Olive College defeated Converse College 73-59 in a Conference Carolinas women's basketball game Monday evening.
Andrea Jones tallied 11 second-half points in a four-minute span for the Trojans, who are perfect in six road conference contests this season. Laporsha Davis finished with 14 points and a team-high six rebounds, while Brittany Miller contributed 11 points and four assists.
Moore scored 15 points in the second half and combined with Jones for 26 of the Trojans' 46 points in the second half. Mount Olive recorded 13 steals and forced 33 Converse turnovers.
The Trojans (8-8 overall, 7-4 CC) built a 13-point lead in the first half after holding Converse scoreless for more than eight minutes and scoring 16 unanswered points. But Converse (3-13, 3-8) narrowed the margin late in the half and scored the first six points of the second half as the Valkyries rallied to take a 33-32 lead with 14:14 left in the game.
Shequanta McGee put Mount Olive ahead for good with a basket and Jones followed with a 3-pointer for her first points of the night to give the Trojans a 37-33 lead with 13:20 remaining. Converse got as close as two points, but Jones hit another 3-pointer with 11:15 left to make the score 41-36.
Mount Olive held Converse without a field goal for more than five minutes and Jones' basket with 10:28 left pushed the lead back to double digits at 47-37. After a Valkyrie turnover, Jones completed her scoring spurt with another 3-pointer with 9:44 remaining to extend the margin to 13 points.
The Trojans return home Thursday for a league contest against in-state rival St. Andrews. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m.
