Floars, Faith Christian boys win New Year Invitational

MONROE -- Tournament MVP Drew Floars pumped in a team-high 13 points as Faith Christian upended Rockwell 49-37 to claim the Monroe New Year Invitational boys' basketball championship.

Tabernacle Christian Academy played host to the tournament.

Chris Powell contributed 12 points. All-tournament selection Silas Denlinger and David Sladick knocked down nine points apiece.

The Conquerors advanced to the title contest with a 64-37 triumph over Tabernacle Christian on Friday. Wes Caudle emerged Faith's top scorer with 14 pionts. Austin Lane and Jordan Brown each scored eight points.

Aaron Hill supplied seven points.

Faith Christian entertains Cornerstone Christian on Friday.

Eagles grounded

Wayne Christian converted its first seven shots from the floor, but Wilson Christian used stifling pressure defense to claim a 60-43, come-from-behind win Saturday afternoon at Clifford Gymnatorium.

Taylor Johnson paced the Eagles with 11 points and five rebounds. Luke Howell collected nine points and 11 rebounds.

Wayne Christian visits Community Christian on Tuesday.

Girls' basketball

Conquerors prevail

MONROE -- Christina Powell led a balanced offensive attack with nine points, and Faith Christian defeated Rockwell 32-15 to claim the Monroe New Year Invitational championship on Saturday.

Brianna Champion contributed eight points, eight rebounds and five steals. Charity Spencer and Elizabethe Weeks (seven rebounds) pumped in four points apiece.

Madison Caudle grabbed 10 rebounds.

Faith Christian (6-5 overall) entertains Cornerstone Christian in N.C. Christian Schools Association Coastal 2-A play on Friday.

WCS falters

Hanna Kaler and Jennifer Price each recorded double-doubles in Wayne Christian's 44-39, homecoming loss to Wilson Christian inside Clifford Gymnatorium on Saturday afternoon.

Kaler posted team highs of 18 points and 12 rebounds, and picked the Chargers for three steals. Price had 10 points, 11 rebounds and two assists.

Kayla Kennedy, Summer Brathwaite, Courtney Barrow and Alaina Moore also scratched in the scoring column.

Wayne Christian (5-4 overall) is the guest of Community Christian on Tuesday.

Warriors go down

FOUR OAKS -- Eastern Wayne opened its Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference season with a 42-41 loss to South Johnston on Friday evening.

Tiarra McIntyre and Danielle Daniel scored 11 points apiece for the Warriors. McIntyre also contributed three assists, five rebounds and two steals.

Tia Jones supplied eight points and five rebounds. Shante Boseman chipped in eight points and five blocked shots.

Eastern Wayne visits Triton on Friday.

* Girls' basketball: Wilson Christian 35, Wayne Christian 26 -- Jessica Swets led Wayne Christian with 13 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Teammate Katie Isenhower contributed seven points, 13 rebounds and four blocked shots.
