Charger girls complete regular-season sweep of CPIC foe Faith Christian-RM

Wayne Country Day created turnovers out of its man-to-man defense and rolled past Faith Christian-Rocky Mount 45-29 in a Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference girls' basketball contest Tuesday.

The Chargers, the two-time defending CPIC champions, had relied primarily on zone defenses to protect its starting five and one reserve on the bench.

"We had to unleash the man-to-man defense, and we'll just have to play our way into shape," said third-year WCDS head coach Eric Perry. "We don't have any other choice at this time. Man-to-man is our best defense and we're going to have to roll with it."

WCDS led 22-13 at halftime and built a double-digit lead midway through the third quarter. The Patriots (11-6 overall, 0-2 CPIC) converted three consecutive possessions and trailed 27-19 with 3:49 on the clock.

The Chargers answered with a 10-2 run. Mack Thompson drilled a 3-pointer, while Kim Martell and Sarah Best combined for three field goals during the surge.

"We just started playing smarter on the offensive end," said Perry. "In the first half, we weren't swinging the ball and we had too many possessions where we tried to go one-on-one instead of running the play all the way through.

"The play would break down and we weren't identifying the defense."

Each team scored eight fourth-quarter points.

Chargers guard Catherine Ford just missed a double-double with 19 points and nine rebounds. Thompson finished with nine points, while Martell recorded eight points and eight rebounds. Best provided eight points, three rebounds and three assists.

Wayne Country Day (5-8, 2-0) swept the regular-season series against Faith Christian-RM for the third consecutive year.

Eagles soar

WILSON -- Hanna Kaler delivered a double-double, and Wayne Christian crushed Community Christian 50-22 on the Carolina Christian 1-A Conference scene Tuesday evening.

Kaler collected 16 points, 10 rebounds and two assists for the Eagles. Kaitlyn Kosuda contributed 12 points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots.

Jennifer Price chipped in 11 points, six rebounds and picked the Cyclones for three steals. Summer Brathwaite pulled down 11 rebounds. Alaina Moore, Kayla Kennedy and Courtney Barrow also scratched in the scoring column.

Wayne Christian (6-4 overall, 4-1 CCC) entertains Northwood Temple on Thursday.

Boys' basketball

WCS dealt loss

WILSON -- Luke Howell and Anthony Mulligan registered double-digit scoring efforts, but Community Christian slipped past Wayne Christian 53-48 in Carolina Christian 1-A Conference play Tuesday evening.

Howell had 14 points, eight rebounds, five steals and four blocked shots. Mulligan collected 12 points and six rebounds. Teammate Tyler Mooring contributed nine points and five assists.

The Eagles (3-8 overall, 2-4 CCC) play host to Northwood Temple on Thursday.

JV sports

* Boys' basketball: W. Country Day 63, Faith Christian-RM 53 -- Josiah Davis pumped in a game-high 25 points for the Chargers. Zack Syverson registered a 23-point performance. Mikal Greenfield, Wyatt Bland and Cody Neal chipped in four points apiece.

Middle schools

* Boys' basketball: Greenwood 44, Rosewood 18 -- Justin Cates tallied 11 points and six rebounds for the T-Birds. Teammate Victor Miller provided 10 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Greenwood (8-2 overall) travels to Eastern Wayne on Thursday.

* Boys' basketball: Faith Christian-RM 40, W. Country Day 26 -- Marlon Cody paced the Chargers' offense with 15 points. Jacob Parks and Jackson Warren added four and three points, respectively.

* Boys' basketball: Mount Olive 48, Grantham 36 -- Clayton Cashwell provided a double-double -- 10 points, 14 rebounds -- for Mount Olive. Teammates Jartarvis Bradshaw and Tyiwan Johnson knocked down 16 and 15 points, respectively. Drake Shaw emerged Grantham's top scorer with 17 points. Mount Olive plays host to Spring Creek on Jan. 21.

* Girls' basketball: Norwayne 50, Spring Creek 11 -- Quanika Artis led the Cobras' offense with 15 points. Meredith Burroughs supplied 11 points, while Jalea Jones scored five points. Norwayne improved to 7-2 overall this season.
