Salttwater Sportsman Seminar in New Bern

Local anglers will appreciate the short drive to New Bern to attend the 23rd annual Saltwater Sportsman Seminar Series. George Poveromo, host of George Poveromo's World of Saltwater Fishing on ESPN2 and a Senior Editor of Saltwater Sportsman, will headline the show.
Once again, I will be appearing with George as co-host of the event, which will take place at the New Bern Riverfront Convention Center's grand ballroom on Jan. 16, 2010.
For those who haven't attended a past seminar, the format is unique. A panel of three professional anglers and a moderator discuss their techniques and tips for each game fish species on stage. Video monitors provide close-ups of the gear and lures they use to catch the fish.
The experts are mostly local professional guides, along with a few experts from other areas to bring new tactics and tips to North Carolina waters.
Capt. Charles Brown of Old Core Sound Guide Service will discuss his techniques for fishing the inshore and offshore waters from Cape Lookout to Ocracoke. Capt. Mike Taylor of Taylor-Made Charters will wow anglers with his tips for catching red drum, flounder, Spanish mackerel and grouper in the Morehead City-Swansboro area.
Captain Gary Dubiel of Speck Fever Guide Service operates out of Oriental, where he catches huge speckled trout, giant red drum and the incredible number of striped bass swimming in that area right now.
Capt. Pete Zook, of Energizer Sportfishing Charters, will reveal his secrets to catching the big game fish offshore of Morehead City, including giant bluefin tuna and billfish. Capt. Jimmy Price will once again keep everyone laughing as well as informed with his unique methods for catching trophy speckled trout and flounder in the Southport area.
Harry Vernon III, a nationally recognized authority on live bait fishing, bottom fishing, offshore trolling and drifting for swordfish, will reveal his latest tactics. Swordfish are the latest billfish craze to sweep the Carolina coast, so anglers who want to complete their slam for all species of billfish won't want to miss his tips.
Dr. Mitchell Roffer is the nation's leading authority on locating surface temperature breaks and ocean-circulation features that hold fish. Water temperature is a key aspect to successful fishing for any species, but for offshore fishing, it is the most important piece of the puzzle.
Courses for this year's seminar include:
* Fool-proof red drum tactics for catching lots of smaller redfish and chunking secrets for adult red drum, tips for catching more and bigger striped bass;
* Secrets of mixed-bag fishing in Pamlico Sound and Neuse and Trent Rivers;
* Tactics for catching bluefin tuna, cutting-edge tactics for trophy king mackerel with lures and natural baits;
* Chumming secrets for king mackerel;
* Sure-fire cobia tactics;
* Fast and easy ways to catch lots of flounder;
* Locate and catch trophy flounder;
* Scoring on sheepshead at the bridges, jetties and offshore reefs and wrecks;
* Taking trophy trout on lures and selected live baits;
* and atching Spanish mackerel.
Bottom fishermen will learn how the pros are catching large grouper by deep jigging. Tips for catching lots of black sea bass will also be revealed.
Emerging tactics for offbeat fishing will also be discussed, including live-bait fishing for yellowfin tuna, jigging for amberjack and new methods for bigger wahoo and dolphin.
New teaser tactics will be revealed for anglers who enjoy trolling for big game, along with daytime tactics for catching swordfish, formerly considered only available as a nighttime species offshore of the Carolinas.
