Six Eastern Wayne players supplied one or more goals apiece in a quarterfinal-round, 7-1 victory over North Lenoir in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference men's soccer tournament Saturday.
Vito Gomes scored twice for the third-seeded Warriors, who visit second-seeded Charles B. Aycock today. Kickoff is 7 p.m. on the Hardy Talton Stadium pitch in Pikeville.
Nick Baker opened the scoring in the third minute and Sang Kim provided the eventual game-winning goal two minutes later. John Baker, Steven Taylor and Carson Daly also found the back of the net for Eastern Wayne, which improved to 9-9-1 overall this season.
It was the final home contest for nine Warrior seniors -- Kim, Daly, Nick and John Baker, Joe DiCesare, Alex Henson, Alex Lloyd, Leslie Cox and Eric Suncin.
Volleyball
Rebels ousted
DURHAM -- Sophomore middle hitter Tearra Ammons pounded out seven kills in North Duplin's season-ending, 25-17, 25-5, 25-23 loss to N.C. School Science and Math in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1-A playoffs.
Ammons added seven digs and served two aces for the Rebels, the No. 3 seed from the Carolina 1-A Conference. Setter Hannah Brock contributed six digs and six assists.
Skylar McCarty recorded three aces and two digs. Angelica Favela collected two aces and seven digs.
"(A) great year," said Rebels head coach Heather Best. "(I'm) proud of the girls and all the effort they gave this year. It was a good group of girls and (we) will miss the seniors next year, but (am) looking forward to several more successful years in the future with our young talent."
Chargers fall
GREENVILLE -- Sterling Coggins dished out 22 assists as Wayne Country Day fell to Faith Christian-Rocky Mount 22-25, 25-17, 25-27, 24-26 in the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference tournament.
Coggins also served six aces.
Hannah Pearson delivered a team-high 12 kills, while Kim Martell (four digs) and Caraleigh Mewborn logged 11 kills apiece. Edie Hooks and Brooke Neal recorded five and two digs, respectively.
