Simmons in second after first day of state tournament

SOUTHERN PINES -- Charles B. Aycock freshman Tara Simmons completed opening-round play two strokes off the pace during the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1-A/2-A/3-A women's golf championships on Monday.
West Henderson's Kayla Scuipider carded a 3-over par 74 on the Longleaf Golf and Country Club links. Simmons fired a 5-over 76 and holds a two-shot lead over Western Alamance's Lori Beth Adams and East Lincoln's Mattie Toby.
Eastern Wayne senior Jasmine Reeves, the east regional champion, is tied for 19th overall after a first-round 86.
Aycock junior Lauren Larison turned in a 99.
The 36-hole event concludes today.
