CHARLOTTE -- Freshman Jack Langston collected the game-winning goal in the final minutes, and Wayne Country Day upset No. 1-ranked United Faith Christian 3-2 in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A boys' soccer playoffs on Tuesday.
The seventh-seeded Chargers (14-6-1 overall) face Faith Christian-Rocky Mount in semifinal-round play Friday. Kickoff is 4 p.m. at the Gillette Soccer Complex in Wilson.
WCDS senior Stoan Stewart opened the scoring in the 22nd minute off Cameron Ford's assist. Four minutes later, Hil Tanner dribbled inside the 18-yard box and crossed the ball to Stewart, who finished the play for a 2-0 advantage.
United Faith answered with second-half goals in the 70th and 73rd minutes before Langston, called up from the JV, notched the clincher.
Chargers keeper Cody Neal had four saves.
"I thought the first half we controlled the tempo and played well," said WCDS head coach Michael Taylor. "The second half, we let them dictate the tempo and I thought maybe we were panicking a little bit. We'll get back to work today."
Gators roll
Dante Ortiz knocked in four goals as Spring Creek rolled past South Lenoir 8-0 on Tuesday evening.
Additional details were not available.
The Gators (13-2-1 overall) travel to Ayden-Grifton today.
RHS stumbles
Zach Behrend and Scott Pate each scored second-half goals for Rosewood in a 4-2 loss at Carolina 1-A Conference foe Ayden-Grifton.
Will Grantham had seven saves.
The Eagles (5-9-2, 3-3-1 CC) concluded regular-season play Tuesday at Princeton, but details were not available at press time.
Eagles defeated
WILSON -- Wayne Christian couldn't overcome a 1-0 halftime deficit and had its season end with a 4-0 loss at two-time defending state champion Greenfield on Tuesday in the NCISAA 1-A playoffs.
Robert Stallings scored for the Knights midway through the first half. Greenfield found the back of the net three more times in the second half, including a pair of goals from Stallings.
Chase King recorded 12 saves in goal for the Eagles, who finished the season 17-6-1 overall.
Volleyball
Dawgs survive
PRINCETON -- Princeton advanced to the third round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1-A playoffs with a 17-25, 25-23, 21-25, 27-25, 15-13 victory over Lakewood on Tuesday night.
Rebecca Harlan pounded out 15 kills to go with nine digs. Erin Schultze recorded 10 digs, four kills and two blocks. Hannah Wood tallied nine kills, nine digs and a block. Nicole Melvin added nine digs and six kills. Kaitlyn Peedin had eight digs.
The Bulldogs (18-5 overall) entertain Raleigh Charter on Thursday.
Tennis
Rams march on
SNOW HILL -- Greene Central overcame a pair of early singles losses to rebound for a 6-3 victory over Topsail in the second round of the NCHSAA 2-A dual-team playoffs on Tuesday.
Samantha Taylor, Jessica Gray, Abby Sugg and Abbey Dail each earned singles wins for the Rams.
The doubles teams of Taylor-Sugg and Gray-Dail were also victorious for Greene Central.
The Rams (20-6 overall) entertain either Tarboro or East Duplin next Tuesday.
WCS falls
Short-handed Wayne Christian concluded its regular season with a 5-4 loss to Greenfield on Tuesday at Wayne Community College.
The Eagles were forced to default at No. 6 singles due to an illness and Faith Sutton was unable to finish her No. 2 singles match as darkness set in.
Brooke Barfield, Faith Sutton and Savannah Sutton were all singles winners for Wayne Christian. The doubles team of Barfield-Faith Sutton was also victorious.
The Eagles begin state tournament play on Friday in Wilson.
Middle schools
* Soccer: Brogden d. Mount Olive 2-0 -- Daniel Barajos scored two unassisted goals for Brogden. Brogden finished the season 8-6 and in second place in the Wayne County Middle School Athletic Conference Division II.
* Volleyball: Rosewood d. Norwayne 25-16, 30-28, 18-25, 25-13 -- Rosewood (13-1 overall, 6-0 Division II) plays host to Spring Creek on Thursday.
