WILSON -- Eastern Wayne's senior tandem of Danielle Daniel-Warner Underwood have clinched a berth in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A individual tennis championships.
Seeded third overall, Daniel-Underwood started eastern regional play Friday with a 6-1, 6-1 rout of South Brunswick's Sarah Brock-Tiffany Capps on the Barton College Tennis Complex courts. The Warriors qualified for the state tournament with a 6-3, 6-1 conquest of Northern Nash's Emily Moedi-Katie Beeman.
Eastern Wayne's Miller Delbridge came within one victory of advancing to state-tournament play. The junior defeated D.H. Conley's Virginia Webb 6-3, 7-6 (0) in opening-round action, but fell to Northern Nash's Randi Price 6-4, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.
Teammates Janielle Daniel and Amber Miller-Grace Delbridge endured season-ending losses in first-round play.
Charles B. Aycock's Hollie Baker and Ashley Howell each captured straight-set victories in the first round. Baker turned back Daniel 5-7, 6-0, 6-4. Howell upended Fike's Connor Allegood 7-6 (5), 6-0.
Baker and Howell each lost in the quarterfinals.
The Golden Falcons duo of Ashley Strickland-Katie Gurley captured a first-round 6-0, 6-4 victory over Currituck's Krysta Messier-Dori Brook. But Strickland-Gurley lost 6-0, 6-1 to top-seeded Lindsay Thomas-Kate Gray of Rocky Mount.
