Bartley earns match point

MOUNT OLIVE -- Racey Bartley pounded out her team-high 16th kill on match point and Mount Olive College escaped archrival Barton 19-25, 24-26, 25-21, 25-22, 15-12 in a Conference Carolinas women's volleyball match Tuesday evening.

Bartley added five blocks for the Trojans, who continued their decade-long dominance over the Bulldogs. Mount Olive earned its 11th consecutive victory over Barton and leads the series 20-2 since 2001.

Senior setter Joanie Werling dished out 52 assists. Caitlin Skislak posted the team's lone double-double with 13 kills and 10 digs. Alicia Mote supplied 13 kills, while transfer Christiane Maul contributed nine kills and eight digs.

Mount Olive (10-14 overall, 10-2 CC) held a one-point advantage in the decisive set before Bartley controlled the net play. Barton saved two match points and after a timeout, Bartley clinched the Trojans' fourth five-set victory of the season.

The Trojans entertain Elizabeth City State on Thursday.

Easley selected

MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive College senior Kendrick Easley has garnered preseason All-America recognition from the NCAA Division II Bulletin in men's basketball.

It's the second preseason A-A honor for Easley.

A 6-foot-1 guard from Norfolk, Easley helped the Trojans log 18 wins last season and earn a share of the Conference Carolinas regular-season championship for the second straight year.

Skirpstas, Woodard shine

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -- Pete Skirpstas and Scott Woodard each recorded top-20 finishes during the Queens University Men's Golf Invitational contested at TPC Sawgrass.

Skirpstas tied for 12th overall with a two-day total of 145. Woodard fired a second-round 72 (even par) and ended up sharing 17th place with a 146. The duo helped the Trojans finish ninth out of 17 teams in the 36-hole event.

Former Eastern Wayne standout Kyle Ham (155) tied for 55th. Clark Rose (156) tied for 64th and Pitt Community College transfer Ryan Campbell (157) tied for 67th. Teammate Fabrizio Ceppi fired a 150.

Mount Olive concludes its fall schedule next week at the Belmont Abbey College Invitational.

Students honored

MOUNT OLIVE -- Eight Mount Olive College softball student-athletes received She Got Game/NFCA Scholar Athlete honors for the 2008-09 academic year.

Kelly Bowen, Kat Cahoon, Allison Czerski, Jenny Jackson, Robbin Kennedy, Kelly Minshew, Katie Nalley and Karen Thornton were all recognized as NFCA Scholar Athletes for posting a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher in the classroom.

Cahoon, Jackson and Thornton graduated in May.

The team compiled a GPA of 3.133, ranking 51st nationally among Division II softball programs. Mount Olive finished 25-18-1 overall last spring and is the only Conference Carolinas school to finish among the top three in regular-season and tournament play each of the past three seasons.
