C.B. Aycock downs Eastern Wayne in OT

PIKEVILLE -- Jose Rodriguez is quickly adding his name to Wayne County soccer lore.

Rodriguez scored the game-winning goal in the second overtime period and lifted Charles B. Aycock to a 2-1 win over county archrival Eastern Wayne at Hardy Talton Stadium on Monday evening.

The senior slipped a low hard shot past Warriors keeper Joseph DiCesare in the sixth minute of the second 10-minute session that sent the Aycock bench into a frenzy. The Golden Falcons (9-1-1 overall) improved to 9-0-1 in their last 10 outings after a season-opening loss against perennial power Hickory.

"We came back there in the second overtime and I think conditioning helped us quite a bit," said Golden Falcons head coach Kevin Adkins. "We got the wind to our back and had a lucky play, and got the ball in the net."

As it seems to do so many times in big games, particularly at home, Aycock found a way to make the big play it needed to finish off an opponent. The Golden Falcons claimed their second Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference win of the season.

"I think it's the dedication of the kids," said Adkins. "We teach our kids to never give up and give us 100 percent because if you go out there and don't give 100 percent you're going to come up on the short end of the stick."

Eastern Wayne (3-6-1, 0-2 ECC) just missed taking the lead in the first overtime period when Nick Baker's header clanged off the post.

Neither team was able to capitalize on scoring opportunities in the second half.

The Golden Falcons had corner kicks in the 52nd, 74th and 79th minutes, but couldn't convert. Chase Thompson's shot in the 74th minute sailed just high.

Sang Kim's header off a cross from Leslie Cox missed wide and negated the Warriors' chance to take the lead early in the second half. Eastern Wayne also misfired on corner kicks in the 55th and 71st minutes.

The Warriors had a goal waived off in the second half when an official ruled that an Eastern Wayne forward ran into Aycock keeper Charles Howell.

"This game probably should have never gone to overtime," said Warriors head coach Jorg Wagner. "Apparently the referee saw a foul on one of our players. I haven't seen one of those honestly in 20 years in high school soccer. We just didn't finish. You've got to put them in."

Brandon Davis scored off an assist from Rodriguez in the 28th minute to give the Golden Falcons a 1-0 advantage. Kim tied the game when his header off a free kick from Nick Bowden found the back of the net in the 40th minute.

Aycock outshot Eastern Wayne 21-12. DiCesare had 13 saves, while Howell had four.
