Trojan spikers turn back St. Andrews in 4 sets

LAURINBURG -- Senior outside hitter Alicia Mote logged a double-double -- season-high 21 kills, 11 digs -- as league-leading Mount Olive turned back St. Andrews 25-17, 25-14, 25-27, 25-23 in a women's college volleyball match Wednesday evening.
The Trojans (7-12 overall) claimed their sixth consecutive win and remained unbeaten in seven Conference Carolinas matches this season.
Neither team led by more than three points in the fourth set. St. Andrews held a 22-20 advantage before Racey Bartley and Caitlin Skislak pounded out back-to-back kills for a 22-22 tie.
Mote's kill continued the match-clinching 5-1 run.
Bartley finished with 15 kills. Skislak narrowly missed a double-double with nine kills and 14 digs. Senior setter Joanie Werling dished out 41 assists in the four-set contest.
Mount Olive returns home for a weekend doubleheader against in-state rivals Pfeiffer University and Queens University. The Queens match, scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, is part of the "Pink for the Cure" campaign during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Donations will be accepted for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, a non-profit organization dedicated to seeking the cause of and cure for breast cancer.
Men's soccer
PEMBROKE -- Ramon Gallardo and freshman Alex Rodriguez each collected a first-half goal, but UNC Pembroke claimed a 4-2, non-conference decision over Mount Olive College on Wednesday evening.
The Trojans fell to 4-5-0 overall this season.
Gallardo converted a penalty kick in the 11th minute and assisted on Rodriguez's goal just before halftime.
MOC keepers Zac Scott and Jamie Carano combined for three saves.
The Trojans travel to Limestone (S.C.) on Saturday.
