Maloney finishes as top Trojans runner

WINGATE -- Kerry Maloney finished fourth out of 72 runners and Mount Olive College ended up third overall in the team portion of the Wingate University men's cross country invitational on Saturday.
Maloney ran the 8K race in 28 minutes, 16 seconds -- less than a second behind the third-place finisher. Teammates Paul Hoffman (29:06) and Kevin Ryan (29:31) crossed the line ninth and 11th, respectively.
Rashaad Nelson (30:58) and Ronnie Sturgill (31:31) completed the Trojans' team score of 72. MOC posted the second-lowest score among Conference Carolinas teams competing in the meet.
Anderson (S.C.) emerged the team champion with 51 points.
On the women's side, Melissa Moore logged a 19th-place effort of 28:07 on the 6K course. Teammate Rocio Alvarado (29:35) came in 30th overall. Tiondra Miller (32:51), Nikolette Lucas (32:56) and Caitlyn Pye (33:11) rounded out the Trojans' team score of 192 points.
The Trojans finished eighth in the 10-team field.
Mount Olive returns to action Saturday at the ECU Invitational.
Men's soccer
HARTSVILLE, S.C. -- Coker's Tyler Senecal notched the game-winning goal in the 81st minute and the Cobras turned back Mount Olive College 1-0 in a battle of top-10 regional teams on Saturday evening.
It was the Conference Carolinas opener for both schools.
The Cobras, ranked No. 4 in the Division II Southeast Region poll, owned a 12-8 advantage in shots. Coker (6-0-0 overall) earned just its second victory over MOC in the last meetings.
Trojan goalie Zac Scott recorded five saves.
No. 10-ranked Mount Olive (3-1-0) visits Francis Marion on Wednesday.
Women's volleyball
GAFFNEY, S.C. -- Mount Olive College captured the opening set in two matches and extended three teams to four sets, but ended up winless in the Limestone (S.C.) College Southeast Crossover.
Mount Olive (1-12 overall) dropped four-set decisions to Lenoir-Rhyne and Augusta State (Ga.) University on Friday. The Trojans suffered their third loss of the season to Tusculum (Tenn.) and concluded the two-day tournament with a four-set setback against USC Aiken.
Senior middle hitter Racey Bartley led Mount Olive's attack with 18 kills against L-RC and 22 kills against Augusta State. She logged a team-high 18 kills in the Tusculum match and recorded a double-double -- 13 kills, 12 digs -- against USCA.
Caitlin Skislak recorded double-doubles against Tusculum (10 kills, 13 digs) and USC Aiken (14 kills, 11 digs).
Senior setter Joanie Werling handed out 40-plus assists in every match and logged 175 assists overall.
Mount Olive returns to action Tuesday at league archrival Barton College. First serve is 7 p.m. at Wilson Gymnasium.
