FOUR OAKS -- Southern Wayne recorded a pair of critical doubles points and earned a 5-4 victory at Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference newcomer South Johnston on Tuesday.

Morgan Roberts, Jessica Best and Mollianne Kennedy each provided singles wins for the Saints.

The doubles teams of Jessica Best-Taylor Parker and Michala Best-Kennedy were victorious in doubles play.

Southern Wayne (6-4 overall, 2-1 ECC) continues conference play Thursday at two-time defending league champion Eastern Wayne. First serve is 4 p.m.

Crusaders cage Rams

RALEIGH -- Greene Central suffered a 9-0 non-conference loss at perennial powerhouse Cardinal Gibbons on Tuesday afternoon.

"Cardinal Gibbons has a very strong team," said Rams head coach Donald Clark. "We played them in the state quarterfinals of the 2-A state playoffs last year, but they are a vastly improved team, and I believe they will be a force to be reckoned with in the 3-A state playoffs."

The Rams face Greenfield today at Barton College.

Gators halt Rebels

CALYPSO -- North Duplin picked up a 6-3 victory over Carolina 1-A Conference foe Spring Creek on Tuesday.

Lea Taylor, Alanna Jones, Kirsten Strickland and Selena Quintanilla, each earned a singles win for the Rebels. The doubles of Taylor-Jones and Strickland-Quintanilla also emerged victorious.

Jordan Cook and Jessica Lupton each won a singles match for the Gators. Colleen Finlay-Cook provided Spring Creek's lone singles point.

Volleyball

Eagles soar

AYDEN -- Rosewood turned back Carolina 1-A Conference foe Ayden-Grifton 25-18, 27-25, 25-22 on Tuesday afternoon.

Alyssa Spell dished out 10 assists to go with five service aces and a dig. Taylor Johnson provided five kills, two digs, four blocks and an ace.

Rachael Kornegay supplied eight kills and five blocks. Brittney Cabala had four digs and two kills.

The Eagles (3-6 overall, 1-0 Carolina) play host to Goldsboro on Thursday.

Chargers triumph

WHITEVILLE -- Sterling Coggins dished out 12 assists as Wayne Country Day swept Waccamaw Academy 25-21, 25-6, 25-19 in non-conference action.

Kim Martell served 10 aces and recorded five kills. Hannah Pearson logged eight kills. Caraleigh Mewborn and Brooke Neal also contributed to the win.

Wayne Country Day (4-2 overall) travels to archrival Wayne Christian on Thursday.

WCS tops Grace

RALEIGH -- Wayne Christian defeated Carolina Christian 1-A opponent Grace Christian 25-20, 25-20, 25-17 on Tuesday.

Crissi Brogneaux recorded 17 digs and three service aces. Britney O'Hara chipped in 12 digs, six kills and four aces. Hanna Kaler dished out 13 assists and had five kills.

The Eagles (10-4 overall, 6-3 CCC) entertain Wayne Country Day on Thursday.

Dogs bag Gators

PRINCETON -- Princeton earned a 25-9, 25-8, 25-15 over Spring Creek in the Carolina 1-A Conference opener for both teams Tuesday.

Erin Schultze paced the Bulldogs with 12 assists, two service aces and a kill. Rebecca Harlan added six aces and three kills. Nicole Melvin had five kills.

Randi Oxendine had three aces and an assist for the Gators. Brittany Collier added two aces and two kills.

Princeton (6-4 overall, 1-0 Carolina) visits North Duplin on Thursday while Spring Creek (0-6, 0-1) plays host to Ayden-Grifton.

Rebels pound Cougars

CALYPSO -- North Duplin cruised past Goldsboro 25-12, 25-9, 25-14 on Tuesday.

Hannah Brock supplied five service aces and four assists. Alonna Pate had five aces and three kills. Tearra Ammons pitched in four kills and three aces and Angelica Favela added three digs and an ace.

The Rebels (3-3 overall, 1-0 Carolina) travel to James Kenan on Thursday, while Goldsboro visits Rosewood.

Conquerors stumble

Faith Christian couldn't win a pivotal fifth set and ultimately fell 25-16, 21-25, 23-25, 25-19, 15-10 to Berean Christian on Tuesday.

Madison Caudle supplied six kills and five service aces. Courtney Allbritten added eight aces and seven kills. Christina Powell handed out 13 assists and Elizabeth Weeks contributed three aces and three kills.

Faith (3-3 overall) entertains Cornerstone Christian on Friday.

Rams corralled

TARBORO -- Greene Central overcame an early deficit but couldn't win a decisive set in a 25-18, 22-25, 32-30, 21-25, 15-11 loss at Eastern Plains 2-A Conference opponent Tarboro.

Shonice Pettaway pounded out 21 kills and five blocks for the Rams. Maegan Letchworth had 13 kills.

The Rams play host to Wilson Beddingfield on Thursday at Greene County Middle School.

Hawks blank CBA

LaGRANGE -- North Lenoir knocked off Charles B. Aycock 25-14, 26-24, 25-16 on Tuesday.

Brittany Jackson had 12 kills for the Golden Falcons. Tia Jackson added five blocks.

Aycock (1-7 overall, 0-1 ECC) visits South Johnston on Thursday.

Warriors fall

FOUR OAKS -- Eastern Wayne was dealt a 25-14, 25-22, 25-12 loss at Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference newcomer South Johnston on Tuesday.

Andy Macias had four kills for the Warriors. Lura Hulse provided two kills.

The Warriors (3-9 overall, 0-1 ECC) travel to Triton on Thursday

Soccer

Faith victorious

Faith Christian picked up a 5-1 win over Berean Christian on Tuesday.

The Conquerors (2-4 overall) play host to Cornerstone Christian on Friday.

* Volleyball: Rosewood d. Ayden-Grifton 25-17, 25-18 -- Scout Anderson handed out 17 assists and Laura Vinson pounded out 10 kills. Rachlye McAlduff pitched in 10 assists and Kerri Jo Gurley had six kills. Amanda Beckert provided four aces and two kills.

* Volleyball: North Duplin d. Goldsboro 25-1, 25-23 -- Caitlin Davis contributed eight service aces and three digs for the Rebels. Kailey Odom had seven aces and Mia Owens added four aces.

* Volleyball: Faith Christian d. Berean 25-18, 25-14 -- Elizabethe Weeks tallied four kills and three aces for the Conquerors and Abigail Pearce had four kills and an ace. Faith plays host to Cornerstone Christian on Friday.

* Volleyball: North Lenoir d. C.B. Aycock 11-25, 25-12, 26-24 -- Madison Mercer and Ivey Hartzell each provided five kills for the Golden Falcons. Aycock (3-5 overall) visits South Johnston on Thursday.

* Volleyball: South Johnston d. Eastern Wayne 25-4, 25-19 -- Stephanie Smith and Haley Smith both recorded two kills for the Warriors and Hannah Smith had one kill. Eastern Wayne (5-7 overall, 0-1 ECC) travels to Triton on Thursday.
