KENLY -- Princeton collected two fourth-quarter touchdowns and secured a come-from-behind, 38-34 victory over county archrival North Johnston at Ben Seifert Stadium on Friday evening.
Trailing 34-25, the unbeaten Dawgs gained possession and drove into scoring position. Senior quarterback David Gurganus completed a 30-yard touchdown pass to Patrick Jacobs, which closed the gap to 34-31.
On Princeton's next series, Gurganus capped the comeback with a 4-yard touchdown run. Gurganus finished with a school- and career-best 437 yards passing in the non-conference contest.
Jacobs had 144 receiving yards, while Matt Williamson recorded 94 yards in receptions including a touchdown.
"I think we needed a close game like this," said Princeton head coach Russell Williamson. "North Johnston has a good football team and it was a good win for our guys."
Gurganus had a team-leading 62 yards rushing.
Princeton (4-0 overall) entertains Midway on Friday. Former Dawgs coach Harvey Brooks will be recognized as part of the 2009 Princeton Sports Hall of Fame induction class at halftime.
Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. at the Fred Bartholomew Athletic Complex.
Hobbton 55
North Duplin 37
NEWTON GROVE -- Marcus Kornegay threw for a career-high 358 yards and accounted for five touchdowns in North Duplin's 55-37, non-conference loss to Hobbton on Friday evening.
Kornegay spread 19 completions among six receivers. Alan Schilling hauled in season and career highs of seven passes and 119 yards, including a 58-yard scoring strike in the opening quarter. Shayne Deaver and Junior Guzman also caught touchdown passes of 44 and 24 yards, respectively.
Devin Oliver grabbed a 63-yard TD pass and added an 83-yard, third-quarter kickoff return. Oliver paced the Rebels' ground game with 36 rushes on five carries.
"We executed better most of the night," said Rebels head coach Hugh Martin. "We operated out of our spread set exclusively. Marcus was in a good rhythm."
The teams combined for 915 yards of total offense on 106 plays.
Midway 40
Rosewood 7
SPIVEY'S CORNER -- Rosewood trailed just 21-7 at halftime, but couldn't pull any closer in a 40-7, non-conference loss at Midway on Friday night.
The Eagles mustered just 74 yards of offense. Kevin Lewis' 6-yard score in the second quarter accounted for Rosewood's lone touchdown.
"For us it was a game of two halves," said Eagles head coach Robert Britt. "We came out a little sluggish and Midway jumped out on us 14-0 fairly quick in the first quarter. I felt like our kids did a good job of playing hard and catching up to game speed."
Rosewood (0-4 overall) entertains North Johnston on Friday.
Lakewood 22
Spring Creek 6
SEVEN SPRINGS -- Spring Creek played its best game of the season, but Lakewood refused to give up its unbeaten status in a 22-6, non-conference victory at "The Swamp."
The Leopards improved to 4-0.
Dennis Owens opened the scoring for the visitors with a 1-yard touchdown run midway through the first quarter. Wilson Simpson recorded a safety just two minutes later. David Rich capped the quarter with a 12-yard touchdown run at the 47-second mark.
"Our defense has been getting better each week and tonight I feel like we played our best game of the season," said Gators head coach Aaron Sanders. "After the first quarter our guys played very well and I was pleased with the effort."
Neither team scored in the second quarter.
Ryan Jones broke free for a 9-yard touchdown run on the Gators' first possession of the second half.
Spring Creek (0-4) had a chance to close the gap early in the fourth quarter but a quarterback sneak resulted in a questionable whistle and a fumble ruling. The Leopards returned the ball 60 yards and set up the game-clinching score.
Lakewood put the game away on Owens' TD pass to Marcus Page.
"It was one of those games where a play here and there or a call going the other way might have been big," said Sanders. "If we make one more big play who knows what might happen."
Dontay Boseman, making his third career varsity start, passed for 70 yards.
South Lenoir 26
North Lenoir 6
LaGRANGE -- Turnovers doomed North Lenoir in a 26-6, non-conference loss against county archrival South Lenoir on Friday evening.
The Hawks (1-3 overall) coughed up three fumbles and had two interceptions.
After North Lenoir fumbled the ball away on its second possession of the game, the Blue Devils took the lead on Josh Hatch's touchdown.
Hatch made a stellar play on an attempted shovel pass and raced 87 yards into the end zone with his interception. The Blue Devils led 14-0.
North Lenoir avoided the shutout on Maurice Morgan's 50-yard, fourth-quarter touchdown run. Despite his team's offensive struggles, Morgan finished with 170 yards on 31 carries.
