The 6th annual Neuse River Backwater Open Fishing Tournament is Oct. 3 and the launch is at Lawson's Creek Park in New Bern. The event raises money for the Neuse River Foundation, a clean-water advocacy group.
The one-day tournament showcases the four most sought after species in the river -- speckled trout (spotted seatrout), puppie drum (red drum), flounder and stripers known locally as rockfish.
Anglers can stay close to New Bern or venture as far down the Neuse River at Turnigan Bayt and Lower Broad Creek, and up most of the smaller creeks off the Neuse. It is a two-man event and the team with the heaviest creel will win the tournament. The tournament and its sponsors have donated more than $5,000 to the Neuse River Foundation.
