Southern Wayne nets tennis victory over Rosewood

DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne swept the singles action en route to a 7-2, non-conference victory over Rosewood on Wednesday afternoon.

Morgan Roberts opened the affair with a solid 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles and the Saints never looked back. Jessica Best, Erica Strickland, Mikayla Best, Kayla Parker and Molly-Ann Kennedy each added a singles point for the Saints.

The tandem of Faith Paggel-Taylor Davis earned the victor's lone doubles point.

Southern Wayne entertains North Lenoir today at 4 p.m.

Rams roll

EDENTON -- Greene Central put together its strongest performance of the season during an 8-1 victory over Edenton Holmes on Wednesday afternoon.

Elizabeth McLawhorn, Samantha Taylor, Jessica Gray, Abby Sugg and Abbey Dail each won their respective singles match for the Rams.

"We were totally focused from the opening point," said Greene Central head coach Donald Clark. "We finally showed the type of potential that I have been looking for all year."

The duos of Lauren Carraway-McLawhorn, Taylor-Sugg and Gray-Dail each prevailed in doubles play.

Greene Central (6-4 overall) plays host to North Pitt today at 4 p.m.

WCDS holds on

Wayne Country Day earned four points in singles play and held on for a 5-4, non-conference victory over Harrells Christian on Wednesday.

Sarah Best, Mack Thompson, Katherine Roethling and Meredith Roethling each recorded a point in singles action. The duo of Best-Thompson added the match-clinching point in doubles action.

"The Roethling sisters picked up two big points in singles," said head coach Joann Logan said. "We avenged a loss to Harrells earlier in the season and I was really proud of all the girls effort."

Wayne Country Day (2-2 overall) will play host to Wayne Christian today at 4 p.m.

Soccer

Chargers roll

Wayne Country Day did not waste any time in a 6-0 win over Goldsboro on Wednesday afternoon.

The Chargers scored in the opening minute of the contest when Trent Proimos collected a crossing pass from Tucker Pearson and fired the ball into the net. The duo connected for Wayne Country Day's second goal at the 18-minute mark.

Cameron Ford tallied the Charger's third goal just before the intermission.

Stoan Stewart recorded a natural hat trick (three consecutive goals) in the second half on asssists from Jack Langston, Tucker Pearson and Tyson Pearson.

Cody Neal recorded five saves for Wayne Country Day (7-1 overall). The Chargers travel to Parrott Academy tonight at 7 p.m.

Volleyball

Warriors downed

Eastern Wayne never got its offense together in a 25-22, 25-4, 25-21 loss to Havelock on Wednesday.

Emily Sparks paced the Warriors with three digs and two aces. Andi Macias delivered three kills in the defeat.

Eastern Wayne (2-8 overall) travels to Kinston tonight.

Rebels defeated

Poor passing and lack of communication doomed North Duplin in a 22-25, 25-11, 25-21, 25-15 loss to North Johnston on Wednesday.

Tearra Ammons led the Rebels' offense with four kills and six digs. Skylar McCarty added eight digs and four service aces. Alonna Pate finished with three kills.

North Duplin (2-3 overall) opens Carolina 1-A Conference play at home Tuesday against league newcomer Goldsboro.

Falcons falter

WILSON -- Wilson Fike shook off a poor second set and went on to defeat Charles B. Aycock 25-13, 14-25, 25-19, 25-12 on Wednesday.

Beth Carter led the Golden Falcons with nine kills and five service aces. Ashley Shingleton added seven aces in the defeat.

C.B. Aycock (1-6 overall) will travel to North Lenoir on Tuesday.

JV sports

* Soccer: Eastern Wayne d. North Johnston 3-1 -- Steven Taylor tallied two goals and an assist for the Warriors. Kyle Sasser added Eastern Wayne's final marker and Andrew Cummings notched one assist. The Warriors improved to 3-1-2 overall.

* Volleyball: Havelock d. Eastern Wayne 25-20, 23-25, 25-17 -- Stephanie Smith led the Warriors with three kills. Elizabeth Aduelo tallied three aces. Eastern Wayne (4-6 overall) travels to Kinston tonight.

* Volleyball: North Duplin d. North Johnston 23-25, 25-20, 25-23 -- Ansley Hill dished out eight assists for the Rebels. Mia Owens added seven digs and Jessica Jones tallied four kills. The Rebels improved to 3-2 overall.

* Volleyball: Wilson Fike d. C.B. Aycock 25-20, 21-25, 25-22 -- Ivy Hartzel tallied six kills for the Golden Falcons. Reagan Herndon recorded four aces. C.B. Aycock fell to 3-4 overall.
