Goldsboro, Princeton dominate respective opponents

BEAUFORT -- Vontarius Kornegay collected a season-high three rushing touchdowns and Goldsboro hammered East Carteret 30-6 on Friday evening.

Kornegay scored on runs of 24, 24 and 18 yards, and concluded the game with 71 yards rushing on just eight carries.

Wayne Hammonds paced the Cougars' ground attack with a season-best 163 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries. Andre Montgomery, one of the area's top five rushers, contributed 132 yards on 18 attempts.

Kornegay and Montgomery have combined for seven TDs in the Cougars' two victories this season.

"It was pretty decent, but as always, we sputtered in the first half," said third-year Goldsboro coach Eric Reid. "We'd get into the red zone and stall out. We went in at halftime, made some changes personnel-wise on the offensive line and found a good combination.

"We started wearing them out a little bit and made some things happen."

The Cougar defense recovered two fumbles.

But the statistic that most-pleased Reid was penalties. Officials flagged the visitors for just six infractions that totaled 40 yards.

"That was awesome," said Reid. "Everything just worked out well."

Goldsboro (2-1 overall) returns home Friday to face unbeaten county rival Charles B. Aycock. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Cougar Stadium.

The Golden Falcons have won four of five meetings since 2004.

"They are on a roll and well-coached," said Reid. "(Coach) Randy (Pinkowski) has those guys clicking on all cylinders. They're physical up front and have some good skill-position guys."

HOLLY RIDGE -- Ranked among the nation's top 10 passers in the high school ranks, David Gurganus continued to shred opposing defenses Friday evening.

The senior quarterback completed 14 passes for 354 yards and a career-best six touchdowns in Princeton's 55-6, non-conference shellacking of Dixon. Gurganus spread the yardage among five receivers, including senior Benton Myers, who hauled in a career-high 152 yards and three touchdowns on just five catches.

T.J. Wilson logged three touchdown passes and finished with 128 yards receiving. Patrick Jacobs (84 yards) and Matt Williamson (20) combined for five receptions.

Gurganus is less than 20 yards from reaching the 1,000-yard passing mark this season.

"It's who we are, so I guess that's what we're going to do," said Princeton coach Russell Williamson of the passing game. "The kids have done a great job learning the offense and it's working well for us right now. We'll see how it goes."

Dylan Myers tossed a 30-yard scoring strike to Benton Myers.

Princeton finished with 435 yards of total offense.

The Dawgs' defense played with a "bend-don't-break" attitude and forced three turnovers. Dixon managed to collect first downs on big plays, but couldn't sustain any momentum.

Princeton (3-0 overall) travels to North Johnston on Friday.

TEACHEY -- Quintae Bradshaw accounted for Southern Wayne's lone touchdown in a 49-6, non-conference loss against Wallace-Rose Hill at Thell B. Overman Field on Friday evening.

Bradshaw's run covered five yards.

Javonni Robinson emerged the Saints' top rusher with 57 yards on 13 carries. Backfield mate JaQuan Cobb contributed 44 yards on 14 totes.

The Saints (0-3 overall) compiled 165 yards of total offense.

"It was a difficult evening," said Southern Wayne head coach Bob Warren. "We played a very good football team. We found some areas we have to improve upon to be competitive. We're going to continue to get better.

"We've got some good, young talent."

Southern Wayne entertains Kinston on Friday. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. at the Doyle Whitfield Athletic Complex.

East Bladen    25

WARSAW -- East Bladen converted two first-quarter turnovers into touchdowns and stunned James Kenan 25-0 at Bill Taylor Field on Friday evening.

The Cougars haulted the Tigers' 34-game, regular-season win streak with fourth-year head coach Ken Avent Jr. Kenan's last regular-season loss occurred Nov. 4, 2005 against county archrival Wallace-Rose Hill.

East Bladen forced four turnovers.

"It was over pretty quick," said Avent Jr. "They're a good team and forced us to make some mistakes, and took advantage of it. We've just got to keep working and we'll be all right. It's good to find out what your weaknesses are before you get into conference (play)."

Brian Moore led the Tigers' offense with 47 yards rushing. Quarterback Dasmine Smith completed five passes for 69 yards. James Owens Jr. hauled in two receptions for 58 yards.

Middle linebacker Kyle Bostic posted a game- and career-high 19 tackles in the loss. Kendric Faison and Jaime Gonzalez recorded 12 stops apiece.

"Kyle has a nose for the ball and he makes plays," said Avent Jr.

The Tigers (2-1 overall) return to action Sept. 18 at East Duplin.

Kinston    50

North Lenoir    0

KINSTON -- Dory Hines threw for 235 yards and three touchdowns as unbeaten Kinston captured its fourth consecutive Freedom Cup with a 50-0 rout of North Lenoir.

The Vikings (3-0 overall) earned their second victory over a county opponent in successive weeks with second-year head coach Battle Holley. Kinston has outscored the opposition 124-12 this season, including two 50-point outings.

Hawks starting quarterback Romero Arnold missed the non-conference contest with a rotator cuff injury. Tailback Mike Sutton departed with a third-quarter leg injury. Neither player's status is known for Friday's home game against arch-rival South Lenoir.

Maurice Morgan paced North Lenoir's offense with 69 yards rushing on 24 carries.

The Hawks are 1-2 overall.

New Hanover    35

WILMINGTON -- Eastern Wayne tallied touchdowns in the closing seconds of each half during its 35-12, non-conference loss against unbeaten New Hanover on Friday evening.

Jalen Barnes, in his first varsity start, threw for a career-high 121 yards and two touchdowns. Lamar Best snagged a 38-yard, first-quarter TD strike. Noah Hinson hauled in a 5-yard scoring pass in the final period.

Best finished with 59 yards receiving on five catches.

The New Hanover defense limited the Warriors to minus-9 yards rushing and just 112 yards of total offense.

Eastern Wayne (0-3 overall) travels to Greene Central on Friday.

Midway    34

Spring Creek    0

SPIVEY'S CORNER -- Johnathan Midgette rushed for a season-best 108 yards as Spring Creek suffered a 34-0 loss to perennial 1-A power Midway near the Hollerin' Capital of the World on Friday evening.

Midway forced a couple of turnovers and held the visitors to 79 yards of total offense. The Gators didn't complete a pass in three attempts.

Spring Creek senior cornerback Anthony Green picked off the Midway quarterback, giving him two interceptions in three games this season.

"I felt like our defense probably played one of the better games they've played this season," said Gators head coach Aaron Sanders. "Offensively, we've got to do things better. We've got a bunch of young guys who have been put on the spot and they're still having to learn the game.

"But I thought we gave a much-better effort than we did against Hobbton."

The Gators (0-3 overall) continue their run through the Tri-County 1-A Conference with a home game Friday against Lakewood. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. at "The Swamp."
