BEULAVILLE -- Harley Howard and Katie Gurley earned a pivotal point at No. 3 doubles and Charles B. Aycock escaped with a 5-4 win at East Duplin on Thursday.

The two teams split the six singles matches before the Golden Falcons claimed two of three doubles contests to take the road win.

Hollie Baker, Ashley Howell and Nicole Kessler each recorded singles wins for Aycock. Abbey Strickland-Howell emerged victorious at No. 1 doubles.

Aycock (2-1) travels to defending 3-A eastern dual-team champion Wilson Fike on Tuesday.

Volleyball

RHS falls short

KENLY -- Rosewood opened its 2009 season with a three-set loss to former conference rival North Johnston on Thursday.

Taylor Johnson contributed 12 digs, 10 kills, four service aces, four blocks and two assists for the Eagles. Stephanie Hall provided nine digs and five assists, while Alyssa Spell added eight digs, seven assists and three kills.

Megann Tyndall had seven digs, two assists and a kill.

Rosewood (0-1 overall) visits Midway on Monday.

Cougars caged

WILSON -- Goldsboro dropped a 25-7, 25-8, 25-14 non-conference decision to Wilson Fike on Thursday.

The Cougars (0-3 overall) travel to North Lenoir on Monday.

Soccer

E. Wayne beaten

WILSON -- Hunt collected goals in each half and turned back former conference foe Eastern Wayne 5-1 on Thursday evening.

The Warriors, directed by head coach Jorg Wagner, fell to 1-1 this season.

Scoring details were not available for Eastern Wayne.

JV sports

* Boys' soccer: Eastern Wayne 4, Wilson Hunt 4 -- Kyle Sasser scored twice for Eastern Wayne, while Steven Taylor and Andrew Cummings also added goals.

* Volleyball: Rosewood d. North Johnston 25-23, 25-22 -- Amanda Beckert, Amanda Howell and Rachyle McAlduff each served well in the Eagles' season-opening victory.
