PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock opened its 2009 girls' tennis campaign with a 7-2 victory over Greenfield on Monday afternoon.

Greenfield claimed the number one singles match as Annie Nowell topped Abby Strickland 6-4, 6-2. However, the Golden Falcons rallied back behind individual wins from Holly Baker, Ashley Howell, Harley Howard and Nicole Kessler.

C.B. Aycock swept the doubles action with the tandems of Amanda Farmer-Kessler, Strickland-Howell and Baker-Howard each claiming a victory.

The Golden Falcons (1-0 overall) entertain Greene Central today. First serve is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

Rams downed

WILSON -- Greene Central suffered a season-opening, 5-4 heartbreaker against defending eastern Class 3-A dual-team champion Wilson Fike on the tennis courts on Monday.

Jessica Gray and Abby Sugg each earned a singles victory for the Rams.

The duos of Lauren Carraway-Sugg and Samantha Taylor-Abbey Dail each claimed their respective doubles match.

"Abbey and Samantha executed really well in doubles," said Greene Central head coach Donald Clark said. "I was pleased with their net play and teamwork."

Hawks top Rams

LaGRANGE -- North Lenoir upended Greene Central 25-14, 25-23, 25-14 in the season-opening match for both teams Monday afternoon.

Amanda Sugg led the Rams with 12 assists, while Shonice Pettaway added eight kills and two blocks.
