Nearly 90 participants turned out for the 24th annual Goldsboro Family YMCA Sprint Triathlon on Saturday at Walnut Creek Country Club.

A total of 88 participants competed in the 1/2 mile swim, 20 mile bike ride and the 5K run. Five mixed teams, four male teams and one female team also took place in the event.

"We usually have about 110 participants," Goldsboro YMCA Executive Director Kriquette Davis said. "A bunch of folks from Greenville that normally participate have an Ironman event coming up soon and they don't like doing two races that close together. I feel like the economy is another big reason. I would like to thank all our volunteers for their help in making this event possible."

Goldsboro's George Worrell was the triathlon's overall winner. Worrell, 34, finished the race in one hour, 21 minutes and 41 seconds. Frank Fisher, also of Goldsboro, finished second in a time of one hour, 23 minutes and 20 seconds.

Amy Quinn of Pine Knoll Shores, was the women's overall winner with a time of one hour, 30 minutes and 50 seconds.

Team Alyea-Kaspar captured first place in the men's team standings with a time of one hour, 51 minutes and eight seconds. We Tri finished first in the mixed team competition after compiling a time of one hour, 38 minutes and 39 seconds.
