CONCORD -- Wesley Simmons extended his lead on the final day and emerged the 11-Under division winner in the 2009 Dogwood Junior State Championships.

Simmons, who hails from Goldsboro, carded a 27-hole round of 112 -- eight strokes better than his nearest competitor. He shot a pair of 37s on Tuesday and Thursday, respectively.

On the girls' scene, Goldsboro's Tara Simmons placed 16th overall and ended up sixth the 15U division. Her three-day total was 254.

Cabarrus Country Club hosted the event, which is sanctioned by the Carolina Golf Association.

Rose fares well

Clark Rose, a rising junior at Mount Olive College, is tied for seventh overall after opening-round play of an U.S. Amateur Sectional Qualifier at Walnut Creek Country Club.

Rose fired a 1-under par 71 on Thursday.

Fellow MOC teammate Scott Woodard shares 16th place at even par. Barton College standout Jonathan Burke, the reigning Wayne County Amateur Open champion, and Matthew Davis are tied for 30th overall at 2-over par.

Crain misses cut

BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. -- Goldsboro native Andy Crain just missed the cut by two strokes after two rounds of the eGolf Professional Tour's Columbia Championship.

Crain finished 36-hole play at 1-over par.
