WILSON -- Wayne County netters will battle for third-place honors when the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 3-A eastern individual regional women's tennis tournament concludes today.

Rain suspended play Saturday on the Barton College Tennis Complex courts.

Southern Wayne senior Tara Hirsch, the Eastern Carolina Conference champion, opposes Wilson Hunt's Keiona Love for third place. Hirsch posted back-to-back wins over Margaret Arroyo (Rocky Mount) and Jessica Roff (White Oak) before falling to Fike's Connor Allegood in semfinal-round play.

Hirsch has qualified for this week's NCHSAA championships.

In doubles, Eastern Wayne's tandem of Lindsey Frederick-Mollie Musgrave will face Rocky Mount's Kate Gray-Caroline Gray in the third-place match. Frederick-Musgrave, who won the ECC crown, dispatched Bertie's Jody Mizzelle-Courtney Dunlow in the opening round and Fike's Sarah Flinn-Kaitlyn Suggs in the quarterfinals. Frederick-Musgrave lost the middle set, but bounced back 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 and punched their ticket to the NCHSAA tournament.

However, the Gryphons' Lindsay Thomas-Addie Keeter pulled out a 6-2, 7-6 (1) decision over Frederick-Musgrave in the semifinals.

Southern Wayne's Amber Bowden claimed an opening-round shutout of West Carteret's Corinne Rixey, but lost in the next round to Fike's Mary-Katherine Prince. The Warriors' Miller Delbridge advanced with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Currituck's Jessia Meidinger, but tumbled in the quarterfinals against Fike's Allegood.

Eastern Wayne's doubles of Danielle Daniel-Kelsi Yates endured a first-round defeat against the Gryphons' Gray-Gray. Charles B. Aycock's duo of Kristen Fischer-Hollie Baker suffered a 6-7 (5), 7-5, 0-6 loss against Fike's Mallory Short-Meredith Pruden in the first round.

The Warriors and the Golden Falcons return to action Tuesday in the NCHSAA dual-team playoffs. Eastern Wayne is the guest of West Carteret, while Aycock travels to Jacksonville White Oak.
