HAMPSTEAD -- Facing elimination, Spring Creek rallied from a two-set deficit and upset Coastal Plains champion Topsail 24-26, 21-25, 25-20, 26-24, 15-11 in the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 1-A volleyball playoffs.

Senior Kristin Smith led the Gators with 24 kills, seven blocks and a service ace. Shaquita Brooks provided 15 kills, six blocks and two aces. Randi Oxendine added 28 assists, two aces and a kill and Alex Benton had two aces and a kill.

The Gators visit Carolina 1-A Conference foe Princeton for a second-round match Tuesday. First serve is 6 p.m.

Leopards pounce Eagles

SALEMBURG -- Rosewood's season came to a close with a 25-15, 20-25, 12-25, 17-25 loss at Lakewood in their N.C. High School Athletic Association 1-A playoff game Saturday.

Taylor Johnson finished with 12 kills and 10 digs and Paige Babb handed out 16 assists to go with seven digs. Jennifer Hall recorded four kills and three digs and Alyssa Spell added three digs.

The Eagles concluded the year 9-12 overall.

Hawks victorious

LaGRANGE -- North Lenoir advanced to the second round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 2-A playoffs with a 25-8, 25-16, 25-19 victory over Jacksonville Northside on Saturday.

Jordan Hudson passed out 34 assists and Kristen Davenport hammered out 12 kills. Marrisa Lanier contributed nine kills and Asheena Moore added six kills and two blocks.

North Lenoir (24-0 overall) entertains Cedar Ridge at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.

CBA stumbles

SHALLOTTE -- Charles B. Aycock saw its season end with a 25-8, 25-6, 25-19 loss against West Brunswick in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A playoffs on Saturday.

Beth Carter had four kills for the Golden Falcons (9-10).

Saints down Bruins

WILSON -- Carlos Zometa scored the game's only goal in the 53rd minute as Southern Wayne outlasted Wilson Beddingfield 1-0 in the first round of the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference tournament on Saturday evening.

Alan Nunez recorded double-digit saves in goal for the Saints. Southern Wayne travels to Charles B. Aycock at 7 p.m. today in the semifinals.

NL tops NP

LaGRANGE -- Grayson Phillips scored three times and North Lenoir upended North Pitt 6-2 in the Eastern Plains 2-A Conference tournament on Saturday.

Spencer Bass, Tyler Sanders and Hugo Garcia each scored for the Hawks. North Lenoir (12-8-2 overall) continues EPC tournament play today at top-seeded Tarboro.

Warriors ousted

Kinston scored one goal in each overtime, and shocked Eastern Wayne 4-2 in their Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference tournament match Saturday evening.
