Junior Legion: Wayne County South sweeps regular-season series from North

DUDLEY -- When two hot teams hit the diamond for a cross-county showdown, something has to give.

Cody Richards and Scott Holloman each slugged a home run as Wayne County South defeated Junior Legion rival Wayne County North 10-3 in an Area I/II Central Conference contest Friday evening.

Holloman smacked a two-run homer for the second straight outing.

"Scott is really locked in right now, and he has been for about the last week," said Wayne South head coach Trae McKee. "For him, it's all about squaring the ball up and driving it, and he did that again tonight."

Holloman's RBI double and Jordan Williams' RBI groundout gave South a 2-0 lead in the first inning.

North answered with Robert Faucette hammered a Will Broadwell offering over the fence, which accounted for three, third-inning runs. But North couldn't keep the slim 3-2 advantage.

Holloman delivered his second RBI double of the game and was immediately followed by a two-run single from Williams. After Keenan Winn doubled, Richards unleashed his home run and gave his team an 8-3 lead.

The five-run cushion allowed Broadwell to settle in and earn a complete-game win. The right-hander gave up eight hits and struck out two.

"Will did a really good job for us, because he mixed his pitches well," said McKee. "His change-up was great pretty much the whole game, and he had command of the fastball to go along with it."

Wayne South added two insurance runs in the fourth inning on Holloman's blast over the center field fence. The slugging first baseman finished the game 3-for-3 .

"It is great to see guys that you coach improve as the summer goes on," said McKee. "To see guys playing better and not making the same mistakes as they did earlier in the year shows that some of what we're trying to teach is sinking in."

The loss snapped North's three-game win streak.

"This was our fourth game in four nights. We won the first three, but tonight we didn't have it," said North coach Jabo Fulghum. "I am really happy with how we have been playing ... beating Kinston in extra innings and D.H. Conley last night, but tonight South hit the ball when they got guys in scoring position and that was the difference."

Wayne County South improved to 12-4 overall and 10-2 in Central Conference play, while Wayne County North exited 11-9 and 6-5 against conference opposition.
