Goldsboro native McClary named All-American

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Goldsboro native and Elizabeth City State University offensive lineman Ronnie McClary has been named to the prestigious 2006 SBN Sports Black College All-American football team.

McClary is just the third player in Elizabeth City State history, and first in 20-plus seasons, to earn All-American accolades.

The son of Ronnie Sr. and Gladys McClary, Ronnie is just the second Goldsboro High football player to receive the honor.

Montrell Coley, a record-setting running back in the 1990s, drew All-American recognition while at Hampton (Va.) University.

Coley's jersey has since been retired at Goldsboro.

McClary garnered first-team, All-Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association honors this past fall. He was named CIAA offensive lineman of the week on four occasions and helped the Vikings record their best turnaround in school history.

Elizabeth City State reached the 2006 CIAA Championship game against in-state rival N.C. Central and advanced to the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs.

All the honorees will be formally recognized at the 33rd annual BCAA awards banquet scheduled for Feb. 17 at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis. The banquet is part of the BCAA Awards Weekend, which celebrates the academic and athletic achievements of student-athletes who play football at America's historically-black colleges and universities.
